Was wondering if anyone knows the procedure for getting a student parking permit. My D will be a sophomore next year and we are thinking about letting her take a car but only with a parking permit. Is it a lottery? Do most applicants get a permit? Thanks for any help!

Parking information is on Tulane’s website under the police department section. My S registered for a permit for the first time online at that site and paid via accounts receivable. He did this in early August (Permits are valid from August of one year to August of the next, and registration/renewal begins sometime in early August), and picked up the permit hang tag when he arrived on campus on move-in day. The person I talked to at the parking office said they issue permits to any eligible student who applies; there is no lottery or limit. Somewhere in the parking info it is described as a “permit to hunt for a spot”, but S says he has never had trouble finding a spot somewhere - perhaps not in his preferred location. During the week he usually parks in the garage, and on the weekend, when there are fewer restrictions, he moves the car closer to his dorm.

Thanks so much for the info MOM2TX! I

i remember it being quite expensive for a parking permit, around $550 a semester (and that was 3 or 4 years ago, so it might be more now), but it’s relatively easy to get one. i think i just went to some office in the parking garage, filled out paperwork, and then got my permit. i never had a problem finding a spot in the garage though. i think with all the students from so far away, not many people on campus had cars for it to be an issue. a lot of people who do have their cars live off campus and park in the driveways or on the streets near their apartment/house.
