Freshman Car Rule

Hey Everyone,
I'm fairly sure I'll be going to Tulane next year!
The freshman no car rule is really bothering me. I have a car in the US, and I really want to take it with me instead of selling it or paying for a garage. Is there any way to park the car somewhere else or get the permit somehow? Can any upperclass man help me with this please? Thanks

You can arrange to have the car off campus-- you just cannot get an on campus parking permit. There may be someome willing to “rent” a spot in their driveway, or you can find street parking not far from campus. Just be sure not to let it sit too long without driving it or the battery may die.

I am currently a freshman, and while I don’t have a car here I do know plenty of people who do. You can park for free on many of the streets around campus, Broadway is where a lot of my friends park. Depending on what dorm you live in, it may be a 5 to 10 minute walk, but the garage at Reily is probably just as far and you pay about $700 a semester for it. Also, you can park on campus in most places without a permit Fridays after 5 pm until Monday at 8 am. Sometimes, finding parking may be a hassle on Broadway but most of my friends who have cars don’t have too much trouble.

Do you think a car is needed at Tulane? Or is it more of a hassle?

Probably not necessary. DS’s freshman roommate had a car off campus (had a relative in town whose house it stayed at) and they occasionally used it to run errands or pick someone up from the airport. Then the roommate had an accident with the car on a visit home, so that was the end of that. MY s lives off campus, and only brought a csr this second semseter. He’s been fine without a car, though he appreciates the convenience now.

Almost everyone that lives on campus has said that a car is more of a hassle than a benefit. The vast majority of Tulane undergrads do not have cars on campus, and usually just enough do that you can almost always find someone to go run errands with if you need something that’s out a ways and you don’t want to wait for the Tulane shuttle.

So I guess it would be better just to leave my car home for freshman year, and bring it starting sophomore year?

Or even junior year. You are required to live on campus the first two years. But since you will have been there a year, you can decide for yourself. But I would leave it freshman year unless you know you have special reasons to need to drive places you cannot walk to or get the streetcar. Or take the Tulane shuttle.

Confused. You first said you would have to sell it or pay to garage it as you are an international. If you have family here, leave the car with them. Decide later. There will be plenty of kids with cars for you to ride with if need be. My s didnt bring his 'til second semester junior year and was just fine without it. Bring or buy a cheap bike. You will be fine.

sorry for confusing you,
I’m an international student, and I have lived with an american host family for the past 3 years. When I say leave it home, I mean I’ll probably have to garage it or let someone else use it.

How far are you from New Orleans?

very far. About 1000miles, I live in VA

Driving in new orleans is pretty tricky, as NOPD are ticket-happy. That said, it’s sometimes very convenient to be able to drive. I have a car by campus as a freshman myself and I can’t count the number of times it’s come in handy.
