I have a freshman at Tulane now. Unfortunately the rest of our family will be going overseas to live for two years come the summer. My son would dearly like to take his car back with him, and I'd rather have the car be used then sit here and rot. I know a parking permit is no more than a hunting license for a spot. How realistic is it that he'll be able to get a spot and not get himself in trouble with tickets and such?
Anyone have experience with parking on campus?

A related question. Is it true freshman are not allowed cars at Tulane?

Actually there is a large parking garage at the north end of campus by the Reilly Center, and another somewhere I think where they have a shuttle running. Hopefully someone with far more direct info can weigh in here, I have never had the need to park at Tulane. My understanding is that as a sophomore he can get a permit.

idad - yes, it is true freshmen cannot get permits. Of course they can theoretically have a car if they can make parking arrangements off campus, but what a hassle!

P.S. I just went and looked at the Tulane map. There is Diboll, which is the one next to the Reilly Athletic Complex, and Rosen, which is behind the baseball stadium and is where they have the shuttles. Those would be the two larger parking areas that have parking by permit.

I say sell the car.
A car for a freshman will be a hassle at best and a huge potential for trouble at worst.
Between the free shuttles, streetcar line and taxi’s a car just seems a huge waste at Tulane.
Just my humble opinion.

Well, the one with the car will be a sophomore, but I tend to agree that a car is more of a bother at Tulane than a help. The ONLY reasons I can see the need for one is if someone were taking classes at UNO (this seems to come up from time to time, but the reality is that it is pretty rare), or was doing some kind of research out in the bayous or something like that. On the other hand, I can see where he would still want to have the car for the summers, unless he is going overseas in the summers to be with his family. Then the car really does seem kind of a burden (have to keep up insurance, maintenance, etc.

I’m a freshman and I drive to school every day, and I’ve never seen the garage or Rosen lot completely full (except for baseball games). Your son shouldn’t have a problem parking in the garage with a permit. In fact, many students who live on campus only have cars to use them to go home on long weekends, to take friends to the airport, etc.

Freshmen can only buy permits if they declare residency with family in the metro area. However, there’s no one keeping you from parking on the street somewhere near campus. You only risk having your car exposed to the elements and being broken in to.

Anyone knows how much the car permit will cost per year?

Here are the prices for this academic year.

just to clarify, the garage is 24/7 parking?

i may end up needing to stow my car there. it is way cheaper than some of the rates i’ve been finding for other parking garages in the city.

Yeah, you can leave your car there for as long as you want as long as your permit is valid.

If you’re going to park you car there during the summer I think I read somewhere that they close the floors one at time for cleaning and that you’d risk having your car towed if you don’t move it.

thanks for the heads up!
