Do a lot of kids who have AP Calc credit retake it and take Math 115 during their first year? I feel like I'm one of the few who is ..and the reason is because i only need math for Ross and I don't want to sacrifice my GPA with Calc 2

Ross look at your transcript too. I don’t think you should repeat a course unless you struggled with the material. They wont look so favorably on an A in the class anyways

Do you have AB or BC credit? Do you feel that you really got a grasp on Calc 1 material (derivatives, a little bit of integrals)? If so, go for Calc 2 (it’s rough but not impossible). If not, stay with Calc 1.

I have AB credit. I heard that 115 is curved harshly and that 116 is even harder…so I don’t think 116 is worth the risk of hurting my GPA. I’m pre-med so it’s really the only math class I need to take. If Ross really bases their decision off of repeating Calc, which i hope they don’t, then it’s just a risk i have to take

why do you want to go to Ross if you’re pre-med?

i want to get a BBA too

I don’t follow either. Is med school your back-up plan?

Medicine is #1. BBA is my intended major, since Pre-med isn’t a major.

Math classes at Michigan are difficult but not impossible. I suggest signing up for Math 116 and if it’s too much drop it and take Math 115 instead.

I still don’t follow. So business is your back-up plan?

No, I don’t have a back up plan…i’m going to apply to med school. I want my major to be BBA. It’s that simple.

why don’t you major in something science related?

I understand your plan. I know people with weird majors ending up going to med-school.
But yeah, I’m taking Math 115 too. I thought I understood the context, but I didn’t want to risk 116.
It’s not a bad thing taking 115 anyways.
I think…there’s just so many smart people taking calc III as a freshman and stuff @__@

iamsocool, there is nothing wrong with majoring in business, because no med school will take your concentration into consideration, as long as you fulfill the course requirements and maintain a good GPA. I am assuming you’re majoring in business to acquire a general background of the subject, so you can set up your own practice in the future?

However, I thought you should know that I’ve been studying the breakdown of undergrad majors for those accepted into med school, and business is no where to be found. Let me clarify that business and economics are not the same thing - many economics majors are getting in, but no business ones. I do not know the reason for this, and refuse to believe the assumptions that a business major is “looked down upon.” However, that is just my opinion. But considering that I am not going to major in business, my opinion should not influence yours. You have to ask yourself: Why are no business majors getting accepted? Surely a significant number apply?

An alternative route I would suggest (if you intend to continue on the business track) is getting a dual ROSS/LSA degree. In addition to just taking LSA courses to meet the pre-med requirements, you should really think about taking up a science major or minor in the LSA. This should nullify any slim possibility of what you might call a “business major disadvantage.”
