My junior son has his heart set on attending UT for studio art. He's a fabulous artist, but an average academic student. Are there lower academic standards (but higher artistic standards) for studio art majors? His portfolio is pretty amazing. Thoughts?

The art department will never admit to it, but the answer is yes. Actually, I think the SAT scores for students in the College of Fine Arts are lower than the scores for any other departments within UT. It is mainly based on your artistic talent, and they also take into consideration how much training you’ve had. What is his GPA? Does he have many extra curriculars or community service hours?

GPA is 3.0 at a very competitive, private college prep school. Lots of EC and community service (centered around art- volunteered at Austin Museum or Art, art camps). Good to hear that the FA dept is more interested in his portfolio- not everyone wants to be an engineer!

can i see some work from his portfolio? i am interested in art
