In a previous post, a recent ND grad claimed he spent 4-8 hours per day studying. He referred to the rigorous classes at ND that kept he so busy. While I would fully expect all classes to be challenging would 4-8 hours of studying per night be accurate? Any input from current students. Is ND overwhelming academically? Are you able to enjoy somewhat of a social life? Football Saturdays? Weekend parties without feeling completely stressed all of the time?

It probably depends on your major…and your courseload.

^For instance, would an English major have to spend 4-8 hours studying/day?!?!?!?!?!?!

S was business, then Soc. He didn’t not spend that much time studying. He did spend a fair amount of time researching/writing papers. He has another business venture that is pretty much full time on weekends. He rarely did school related work from Friday after class until Monday.

Most of his roommates were business or engineering. From his comments and experience, I don’t think most business majors study that much. Engineering, ? He says they have a lot of work. Most of his friends studied Sun/Mon through Thurs and socialized all weekend.

How long would an English major needing a 4.0 gpa need to study?

Most of the engineers I knew (myself included) chose a night a week that we were going to go have fun and not do any work. Everything else was booked (though we still got to socialize over dinner and while working on psets). It’s harder for me to speak to the English major work requirements. Fuzzy disciplines are, by nature, more difficult to pin down because the answers aren’t as distinct. Business majors and humanities majors seemed to party a lot more while maintaining good GPAs. I know one guy who lived in my dorm’s “party room” that has a tradition of handing off its residency to the hardest partiers in the upcoming class. No sciency/engin people to dull it up. Those guys spend thousands of dollars on alcohol throughout the school year and sell t-shirts to finance it. That individual is now studying law at UChicago, having graduated with two majors and a 4.0. I also know an English major who is studying at a somewhat less prestigious law school who went out drinking every night of the week but Sunday. I think the 4-8 hours day was accurate for those in my major, but most likely significantly less for people in English and related disciplines.

Interesting. Thanks for the responses! Putsch- Did you graduate in engineering? Did all that studying pay off with a nice job? I hope so! You deserve it!
