I would really like to study abroad, but I am confused as to how the cost works. I will be attending Rutgers University this fall, and I have been researching study abroad options. It turns out that Rutgers has it's own study abroad program, it does not appear to go through another school or third party program. So, is the tuition for study abroad added on top of Rutgers regular tuition or do i just pay the tuition for the study abroad program that semester. For example, let's say I want to go to Florence Italy for one semester. It costs roughly 10,000 dollars. Rutgers tuition costs (9,000 with no dorm for a year), and (20,000 with dorm for a year). Would I pay the 9,000 plus the 10,000 or just the 10,000?

This is a question you need to ask your school as each one has a different set up. At my son's abroad programs you generally pay the school as you normally would and all the students (i.e. parents) pay is the transportation and books. Tuition, room and board is all transferred to the abroad school as well as merit aid. I've heard of other colleges that have just the tuition transfers and then the students are on their own for room and board.

You pay the cost of the study abroad program, not the addtional cost of Rutgers on top of it.

However, I think you are misreading the costs of the Florence program. Maybe confusing a semester with a full year?

Here's the cost of the full year Rutgers Florence program:

[quote]
NJ residents: $19,733
Non-NJ residents: $26,133

1) Tuition, fees, excursions, and basic medical insurance are included in this fee.

2) Travel, housing, food, major medical insurance, and all personal expenses are not included in this fee.

So, if you are a NJ resident, it's $20,000 for a year PLUS the cost of a shared apartment, food, utilities, plus your airfare, plus transportation and personal expenses in Italy.
