study abroad

i was just wondering what kind of study abroad program fordham has

Go to their website and see. There are LOTS of study abroad programs available. Generally at Fordham only the best students get permission to travel abroad which I think is normally a cumulative gpa of 3.0 or better. Fordham has connections with many foreign universities in Europe, some in the Middle East, some in China and Japan, some in Latin America.

Some schools, such as the Gabelli School of Business have their own programs they recommend for business students.

Fordham also has a very close relationship with Heythrop College of the University of London, a very prestigious Jesuit college in London, which emphasizes philosophy and liberal arts. But students have also gone to the London School of Economics, nearby as well.

Finally, Fordham has Go! Trips which are done normally in the summer, but sometimes over a break, which are short service related trips for community/social justice, such as helping poor people build s school in Peru or helping clean up in Katrina affected communities in the deep south.

There is a foreign study coordinator at both FCLC and FCRH. They organize everything with you, whether its a Fordham sponsored/related trip or one you found on your own you want/need approved for credits.

Foreign study abroad sounds fun, exciting and easy to do. Its often expensive, troublesome and can cause issues for you with credentialing etc. so be very careful and think hard about it. These are not the same times as your parents when kids took a napsack and galavanted around Europe riding the trains with nary a worry or concern.

Finally, Fordham sends kids overseas as part of the Prestigious Fellowships programs such as Marshall Scholars, Rhodes Scholars, Fulbright Scholars, Boren Scholars etc. Those are for the VERY best and brightest that Fordham has to offer.

In short, if you want to go, there are programs for you and Fordham will help you organize it. I know kids who were in New Zealand, Spain and China last year. Lots of kids want to go and some don’t go because of financial constraints or its incompatible with their major and graduating ontime. Some colleges STRONGLY encourage kids to go abroad for a semester (Dartmouth and Elon come to mind) and almost push them out the door. But at Fordham its available and they will accomodate and assist you, but its not something “that everyone is doing.”

Not discouraging you, but only stating its important to do well at Fordham your freshman (and perhaps your sophomore year) and its really important to coordinate with the Fordham Study Abroad director to make certain its a good program, its viable, safe and affordable and won’t screw up your graduation plans.

I also have heard of kids going to summer school abroad, which puts less pressure on them vis a vis the credentials/transfer of credits and so forth. There are lots of summer study programs available for your interest.

Good luck.

Keep in mind it costs $175 just to apply for a study abroad program. It’s the read my application fee. They also make you apply a semester in advance to go, the deadline for spring abroad this year was Sept. 10, barely a week after classes started.

Hello I am currently a Sophomore at Fordham in RHS and in the process of Study Abroad myself. If you go to their website,[International & Study Abroad Programs](http://www.fordham.edu/academics/office_of_the_provos/office_of_internatio/international__study/index.asp), it should answer any questions you have. As long as you can fit the study abroad with your classes and majors you should be fine to go anywhere. We have alot of programs as well as using other schools programs for the students benefit. Wherever you desire to go their is a good chance you will be able to go.

thanks. although this doesn’t quite relate, do you know how well known fordham’s history department is?

“Fordham also has a very close relationship with Heythrop College of the University of London, a very prestigious Jesuit college in London, which emphasizes philosophy and liberal arts”

Not to nitpick, but Heythrop is only philosophy and theology…not liberal arts. If given the opportunity to study abroad at Heythrop, take it. One of the best places in the UK to do philosophy.

^^^…no problem Adam. I appreciate the correction and I was aware of that, I just had a malapropism with “liberal arts.” It is a wonderful school, from what I have heard.

I studied abroad in France as a sophomore in college a long time ago. I was gone 14 months and now most kids go for a semester, since its so expensive overseas and many have learned that one semester is enough for them. I will never forget my experience however. I recommend kids to go overseas, if they can afford it, if they can get the credits approved and if they are mature enough. I don’t recommend doing it just because its the “hip” thing to do. On the other hand, going over in the summer gives you some options with flexibility, it wont detract from your major here at home, and is cheaper. Or pick up a couple of Go! trips if you want to do the service thing.
