Does anyone have any experience studying abroad at Cornell? Recommended programs?

I'd like to try it...but I just saw you have to have a minimum 3.0 GPA to do it. I'm below that, but the program I want to apply to has a minimum 2.5 GPA, which I am above. Can I still apply or will Cornell just not allow me to go?

I think CUAbroad might be strict. But if you look for exchange programs (I am in one now), you don't have to go through CUAbroad at all. so no long essays, recommendations, or extra fees. All you have to do is meet the requirements of the program itself.

I think the difference between an exchange program and a study abroad program (like Boston University in Azerbaijan or wherever) is that while you are studying somewhere else, you are directly enrolled in the school and someone from that school is at Cornell taking your place.

It might be hard to distinguish the difference. But even if you might apply through CUAbroad and may not have the grades, still go for it. They might be more lenient if there is less demand. Your best thing to do right now is go meet with either advising in your college and/or CUAbroad advising to see what you qualify for.

DarkIce what college are you in because if it is A&S study abroad is serious. The other schools you can do whatever and go, but Arts if u dont have a 3.0 then you can't go at all since that's one of the requirements despite what the program says. First you must meet A&S requirements then CUAbroad requirements, and then the program/school.

But I'm talking about A&S if ur in that school

My daughter is going to study abroad next fall. Grades she receives while she is abroad will not be included in her GPA calculation, but I believe they will appear on her transcript. If you need to bring up your GPA, study abroad may not be such a good idea.

HK polytechnic has an exchange program with CALS, so definitely look into that. I'm at HK University of Science and Technology which has a relationship with engineering.

i looked up polytechnic cause im interested in abroad too and on their website it says choose a department and take at least 3 classes within the department, since its a engineering school and isn't too big, it's mostly science classes hahaha

my kid was ILR and did study abroad. She had to get permission from ILR study abroad coordinator. They are strict too. The program and classes had to meet with ILR approval.

Oldfort- though the grades do not count towards cornell GPA, if your kid is going to law school,( I do not know how it works for other grad programs) the grades from study abroad will count towards the LSAC GPA- and that is what the law schools look at. She had to send her Cornell transcript and the one from Wells college to LSAC. My kids 4.0 from Italy raised her LSAC GPA by .04. So I feel her study abroad grades were a benefit.
my kid went to florence through the wells college program. She LOVED it.

The process as I recognize it is getting permission from your college and then getting into the program itself. Go talk to someone if you’re worried, but if you can pull it off abroad is SO worth it.
