I have taken Spanish for all 4 years of high school and at orientation this week I don't want to take the placement test for it because I really don't think I would be able to completely place out of it and I fear I might have to take an extremely difficult advanced Spanish course. I wanted to take a new language but would i have to take some type of placement test for that?

If you start with a new language at the beginners’ level, no placement test should be necessary. Just make sure you are in the right beginners’ class for the language. This distinction, for instance, applies to Chinese. That is, Chinese can be Cantonese or Mandarin (different dialects). Also, it is differentiated into heritage and non-heritage. The former Chinese class is meant for people with some Chinese in their background, by virtue of their heritage or exposure in some way to the language. The latter is meant for students with no background in Chinese at all. So just make sure you are in the right type of beginners language class, if there are distinctions.

And then there is the decision of intensive or regular. Intensive moves at a rate of 2 semesters per 1 semester. Intensive Beginners = Intensive Beginners 1 + Intensive Beginners 2. Same for intermediate and advanced.

So you can easily bust out CAS’s language requirement in one year. And you learn a LOT.
