Stupid question...but still need an answer...

I'm sending some creative writing pieces (since I wanna minor in English) to a college I'm applying. These creative pieces are POEMS and they will be submitted online. Is it okay if I use a less-formal and more artsy font (like Lucida Calligraphy) instead of Arial or New Times Roman or is it imperative that I use a regular font?

(These poems will be read by graduates attending the school who will then report to the admissions officers what they think about my work).

As long as it is easily legible. I would show it to someone who doesn’t know your work and ask them to read it. Remember, admissions people are reading hundreds of applications, if it’s difficult to read it won’t make them happy!

I would be careful. You’ve mentioned in other threads that you are also sending in additional recs and local newspaper and magazine articles with you in them. Be careful not to submit too much extra stuff.

^ Oh, I’m not sending the articles myself, my mentor who is writing me the recommendation is. Regarding the creative pieces, it is stated that they would like to read our creative pieces if we have an interest in creative writing.

I would advise against changing fonts, for two reasons:

 1. It distracts from the quality of your writing and could make a reader think, “Why does she need all this embellishment? Is the poem just not so good on its own?”

2) Many computer upload/download programs can’t read all the fonts anyway and could turn it into gibberish. That’s why for resumes, for example, people are advised to avoid bullets and odd fonts - they get lost in the HTML.
