I am planning which subject tests to take in October. I know that I will definitely take Math Level 2 and Physics. I am looking particularly at Princeton, which, among a few other schools requires three Subject Tests in "three different subject areas." Does that mean they want my third test in a subject that is not math or science (like Literature), or would it be okay if I took the third test in, say, Chemistry (because it is a different "subject" than Physics within the science discipline)?

I think they mean for you to take a humanities or language subject in addition to math and science. They want to see breadth.

It simply means it has to be a different subject from the other ones you take. For example, math I and math II would be the same subject but chemistry would be different from both math II and physics. Nevertheless, it never hurts to round out a math and science with a literature or history if you can also do well in one of those.

Posters here are just guessing (as you can see by the contradictory answers you got above). Best bet: contact Princeton and find out for sure. Admissions should be happy to answer your question.
