I submitted the fafsa without a pin or signature- choosing the option that allowed me to submit it and then- apparently- will receive paper work to sign in 10 days.

What exactly happens at this point to the fafsa? Can I go back to it and apply for a parental pin to sign it electronically or is it too late?

Why would you do that? Your FAFSA can not be processed until it is signed.

You may be able to go back in and sign it electronically (not sure to be quite honest as I have not heard this particular question before). I tried looking at the FAFSA FAQ pages and found this

Go ahead and apply for the parent PIN now. Then see if the parent can still can sign it electronically. It may take 1-3 days before you can use the PIN. If you can’t sign it then I suggest calling the FAFSA help line and ask them.

Hopefully you are able to or your FAFSA will not be processed for a while.

Who knows why did that! I typically lose my judgment and act hastily when faced with options on a computer. Someday will learn to slow down. Yes I applied for the pin and will wait and see if I can use it when i have the pin confirmation emailed to me. Thank-you!

I did the FAFSA on the morning of 1/1/10. When it came time to sign, it would not take my pin from last year. Said they had no record of it. In frustration I hit the “file w/o signing with pin button”. Later that day I went back in and tried again. It let me sign with a pin and this time took my pin #.

I think you should be able to do the same when you receive your pin.

The PAPERWORK is a one page paper that you can print out (it says “Print out Signature page” or something like that) and then mail to Mt. Vernon (FAFSA HQ??!!) RIGHT away. Don’t “Wait” for any paperwork to come. Printing out the signature page and mailing it makes it take about 10 days rather than 3,to process, but for instance if a parent has lost their PIN from an older sibling or otherwise has no clue as to their PIN (the FAFSA system knows they had a PIN however) it can be more efficient to just print the paper page, sign it, mail it.
