This summer I took 2 credit courses at Brown University. I asked one (Classics) professor to write me a supplemental rec and he agreed. However, my other (English) professor also offered to write me a rec when handing out final grades (I got an A.) I did only get an A-/B+ on the final paper, and would have gotten an A- in the class, but Brown doesn't assign +/-s. However, the professor grades hard (at the Writing Center I was assured the paper was worth an A), and the professor did mostly like the paper (ex: writing "you're a wonderful analyst, able to explain complicated issues with a clarity and power that is rare"). He seemed to like me as well. I struggled sometimes to participate in class (there were over 20 students), and I wasn't able to get to know the professor well, but he called on me specifically several times to ask my views.

I'm not certain to what degree the letters might overlap. The 1st professor gave both my papers A+s, but he grades fairly easily. I participated more in his class discussions, though, and gave 3 individual presentations - which is why I initially asked for a rec from him.

I'm looking at the Ivies and other top schools, which I know don't encourage supplemental recs. Could sending in 2, from both professors, potentially hurt my chances? Also: Anyone know what supplemental recs consist of? Are recommenders given a specific prompt?

Thanks!
