I heard that a c2c attempted suicide but missed with the gun… any truth to this? It seems like it would just have been easier to not show up to 2c year.

This is the press release.

Release #108

Aug. 12, 2006

CADET HOSPITALIZED AFTER GUNSHOT WOUND

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. Cadet First Class (senior) Michael J. Gill of Edison, N.J., is in stable condition at Penrose Hospital following surgery for injuries resulting from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m., Friday, on Academy grounds. It is under investigation by agents of the Air Force Office of Special Investigations.
Immediately following the incident, Academy counseling professionals, chaplains and commanders were available to Cadet Gills squadron-mates, friends and anyone in the cadet wing who needed their services. The Cadet Counseling Center opened at 8:30 this morning to provide continuing support for all who requested it. Commanders briefed their cadets on the situation this morning, and made them aware of the counseling services available.
Academy officials express their heartfelt sympathies to the family, friends and fellow cadets of Cadet Gill during this tragic time.

Wow,I never heard any of this. That is too bad. It is a stressfull time though. I wonder what lead up to this.

I do not mean to sound uncaring but, not another negetive news story! We don't need this kind of thing.

I heard about this at dinner today. Sad story. I hope he comes to his senses. Life should not be wasted with such opportunity before you.

Raimius is right... it just makes things worse with more that. Do you know if the cadet will be allowed back to the academy?

Most likely not, but it's impossible to say. I asked an air force chaplain (they work with this stuff a lot) and although he wasn't specifically familiar with USAFA policy, he said that most people who attempt suicide are kicked out.

Yeah i would expect... they wouldnt let me in cause of such incidents. And im sure this would just make things worse for any one trying to get in with said history...

Well, I'm pretty sure this cadet knew the rules and did it anyway. He clearly wasn't having the time of his life there. Suicides happen everywhere...

I don't understand why he committed suicide. If he hated life at the academy so much, couldn't he have just not come back? I thought you weren't 100% committed until the first day of your third year.

no one can know why he attempted it, there were lots of personal factors in there. And I'm not saying this contributed, only he can know his reasons, but he's a firstie so he is commited. I hope he gets better and can get his life back on track wherever he'd like to take it.

Very true, sj2009, I hope he does figure out what he wants, and then goes for it.

Through all my calls with the medical people at the academy itself, they said that in almost all cases of suicide at the academy, the person had some previous history (generally NOT revealed on their DoDMERB forms) which is why they have a zero tolerance policy with it.

You actually called the medical group at the Academy to ask them that? Wow. :-)

While the conversation in this thread is somewhat benign, speculation regarding this (whether it be on here or with other people at the Academy) should be kept to a minimum. The vast majority of what you hear going around is just gossip, so it would behoove you all to not pass it on.

Surprisingly, I've actually heard almost nothing. No one is really talking about it.

Isn't the press release legit-- im a four degree and we heard that he shot himself but isn't dead, certainly makes us 4 degrees feel like it doesnt get any better, srufnkid i know what u mean they arent talking but we have talkED about it.

The press release came out the morning after the incident (it happened late the previous evening). Yes, it's legit and it I'm sure it was accurate at the time. Everything I know comes from it.

The cadet's suicide attempt is a serious matter and has affected the entire USAFA family. The current cadets have been informed on who to contact if they would like to talk more about the subject. Counselors are available for you. I feel it is time to let this thread rest. Continue to pray for the injured cadet and his family.

Respectfully, Mom

surfnkid
No - i did not call the academy regarding the "gossip" going on here. The calls i was refering to where with my case. They said they would not waiver me because in almost all cases of attempted suicides at the academy the person had some previous history/attempt.

Ok that makes sense, sorry.
