So recently, a friend of mine committed suicide. Is there anyone else out there who has had a friend or a family member do this? I'm still upset about the whole thing, but I think that I'm starting to get over it. However, my friend's ex-girlfriend took the news pretty hard. I've been trying to help her, but my advice seems rather cheesy (at least that is what I think). Any advice about how to comfort her?

One of my friends (didn't know him that well but enough to be affected) committed suicide after his girlfriend broke up with him. No advice anyone gave her could console her, only time can do that. Over time, she realized that it wasn't really her fault and eventually moved on. If you want to help her, give her a shoulder to cry on while you make sure she doesn't do anything she might regret.

altindiegirl: GET YOUR FRIEND TO TALK TO A PROFESSIONAL. I know you want to comfort your friend, and you should. Just let her know that you care about her and that you'll always have her back. Otherwise, get your friend to talk to a professional. What might take you and your friend a long time to cope with, might happen sooner and healthier if you advise your friend to talk to a professional.

Professional - school psychologist, clinical psychologist, priest/etc., or just an adult.

If you don't have the resources to help your friend, than please point her in the right direction to those who might really be able to help. You're also dealing with the lost right now, so it might not be in your best interest either to have this extra burden.

Having a loved one commit suicide is one of the most emotionally painful experiences anyone can have.

I agree with tnguyen08's advice. You, too, should take that advice because you, too, are in pain due to the suicide of your friend. Please find some support for yourself.
