Sumac 2011

How many people applied this year?

There are 35 spots in total. The introduction says in recent years around 1/4 of applicants were admitted. Plus 50% increase we conclude there are approximately 210 applicants this year.

Program II, Taiwanese junior :)!
I only considered SUMaC and Mathcamp, because school over here clashes terribly with American summer programs.

So there’ll be 10 or maybe less people in Program II? That’s like a quarter of my class O_o
I’m really excited but also slightly apprehensive; I hope I won’t be too out of my depth because I originally thought I’d probably get in the less advanced one.

ahmemood, you should pick the program that you are most excited about, and that will make it the most helpful for college admissions because your enthusiasm will improve your performance, and your enjoyment of the program.

For SUMaC, yes, if you do well in the program and request a letter of recommendation, it would be written by a member of the Stanford math faculty, since they run the program and are the ones who work with participants (along with math grad students). You can send the research you do with your college applications, though it isn’t entirely independent; it is part independent and part collective, since that’s the way most math research is actually conducted at the university level. We had a Facebook page for our group, and a very high percentage of us were accepted to multiple top colleges, but again, it’s not really possible to know how much of that was attributable to a particular program since these kinds of programs tend to attract very qualified students anyway. So pick the program you really want to attend–SSP is of course an amazing opportunity as well, so you can’t go wrong. Cheers.

Thanks alot! …and lastly , is the program 1 really hard? I mean will it be easy to understand the course?
Although i was able to do OK on the test but still i have the feeling it might be hard for me. I think my personal statement , grades, scores and recommendation contributed more towards the admission. I am taking Cambridge Alevel course and it isnt as advanced as this.

i was always under the impression that SUMaC was less prestigious than both Ross and SSP, however you should do the program that you believe will be most fun and beneficial.

MAN!!! I am still totally on the fence…Ross, sumac, or sumac, Ross. grrrr. Someone should make this easy :)

RuTZeR, go Ross, for my sake

ANY Korean Participant?
I’m an international KOrean participant, anyone else?

Hello!

I’m from Romania and I got accepted into Program I with full financial aid. I also got accepted into the Simons Summer Research Program, and I don’t really know what to choose. (at the moment Simons sounds better for me, as I’m doing research in informatics, which is my strong subject, but i wanted to hear other opinions too  )
Thanks :)

Alright after debating back and forth for a week I decided on sum program ii. See you there!

california is more fun, anyway

CezarMocan, research experience is more valuable.

@rick9210: Hey! I think I’ve heard about you coming to SUMaC this year. Even though I live in Arizona, I’m Korean as well (if that isn’t obvious by now), and I made Program II as a junior.

@ahmehmood: To my understanding, Program I will deal a lot with introduction to abstract math. It’ll definitely be a new experience, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

If 210 people applied, and 35 people got in, it would be a 16.67% admittance rate. And from what I’ve heard, out of the 16 rising seniors that were in SUMaC last year, 13 of them got into Stanford. And that’s just counting the Stanford admits. But honestly, decide on what you think would best excite you. If you end up where you enjoy yourself the most, you’ll stand out more in the end. You can’t go wrong either way.

Also, I just created a new Facebook group for SUMaC 2011, so if you plan on coming, please do join.

@ConcreteVitamin: I had a similar solution as you did for problem 9, but I used mod 24 algebra to solve it all out.

Hmm I’m still waiting for the other summer program D: I hope it comes soon!

charmanda256, what’s your the other program?

@ NotSoProdigious Thanks alot! =D

Hello there!
I’m in Program 2! I attended SUMaC last year as well.

Has anyone who was waitlisted received your decision yet?

Hey, guys and gals!
I am a Korean applicant(Obviously South Korean) and just got in!
I had been waitlisted, which made me so sad and nervous for nearly a month…
Now I am so anxcious to see all you guys at Stanford!
