Anyone else outraged? Worried? Any other colleges doing the same thing?

For people who don't know:

SMC has just implemented this summer private tuition thing. For people who gain early entry into the classes they want, tuition is the normal price (although they just bumped it up to $46 a unit from the original $36 -- anyone else remember when tuition at CCC was just $11?).

But for people who want to add a class that is already full, they must pay $200 a unit. Which is like an upwards of $2,000 if they are taking a 5 unit class.

Thoughts?

As for me, since I no longer qualify for financial aid, I lose priority enrollment -- which means I may have to stay at CC for another year if I don't get into a class this summer.

Wow, I FAIL at math. $1000 for a 5 unit class. Duh.

I don’t see what there is to be outraged about. It’s an EXTRA option. You can still get classes the regular way: sign up, wait on waiting list, snipe a spot online when someone gets dropped for non-payment, etc.

If, however, you REALLY need a class before transfer and you just can’t seem to get it, you can pay extra to essentially have them open up a class for you and others like you that need it.

More options are always good.

Yeah. I’m kind of neutral about the whole thing. But I can also see how this might cause a storm for the students who don’t have priority enrollment and can’t afford to pay extra for the classes. Lots of students were pretty upset about it. Others were like “meh.”
