I am attending UF starting in Summer B 2012 as a freshmen and am probably going to major in Industrial Engineering. I was wondering how many credit hours one would recommend to take in the summer, and what classes. I know at preview my academic advisor will be able to help with this, but I would like some personal opinions.

I will hopefully be able to place out of a lot of introductory classes due to AP credits. (Hopefully Calc 1 and 2, Physics 1, Micro and Macroeconomics, and humanities). The main class that I am worried about taking is Chemistry 1 (Chem2045?). I have heard that there is an online intro to chemistry course. Does it prepare you for Chem 1? Is it worth it to take it?

One day you’ll look back and wish you could take classes like Chem 1. Just don’t slack off and get help when/if you need it. The lab class is very easy as well. You should be fine going straight into Chem 1.

Yes, CHM2045 is quite difficult…S is a mech Engineering sophmore and CHM2045 was the hardest class he has had so far, he says. He barely got a B in it. It looks like you have had enough Calc and Physics credits coming in that you really should be fine. However, there is an introductory CHM class that many students take in the summer—I think it is CHM1025 that is a good prep class for CHM2045. You could take CHM1025 in the summer and CHM2045 in the Fall. Be aware that CHM2045 is a "weed out " class, but there is a lot of tutoring help for it…Free tutoring in Broward Hall in the Teaching center…excellent tutoring sessions at Tutoring Zone and Study Edge at reasonable prices. If you have had a solid base in high school…Chem Honors?..you should be fine with CHM2045. There is no online prep class for CHM2045, but why not spend the month of June going on khanacademy website and refresh your memory on basic chem classes. You may want to take CHM2045 in the Fall instead of the summer…it is a large course to cram into 6 weeks…but you could take CHM1025 in the summer and be ready for CHM2045 in the Fall.
