Summer@Brown?

Just start thinking about it, I mean. You have to have one teacher do a phone interview with someone from Brown, I don’t think it really weighs much on whether you’re accepted or not, but it’s still required. I’d have a teacher in whose class I was a stand-out student do it for me, or a teacher who I know pretty well.

I, personally, had my freshman world history teacher do it for me; I could finish his thoughts and sentences when he was in debates with other people, and he told me that if I ran for office, he might vote for me, and that was probably the most valuable compliment I’ve ever gotten. He doesn’t know me too well though, and on the website it said they should know your academic history, so I made a small brag sheet for him, to make sure he wasn’t totally unprepared.

Just wanted to give you a thorough explanation here, sorry for writing a novel haha. Bottom line: Find a teacher who thinks highly of you, knows your academic history (or fill him or her in on it), and would be willing to do a telephone interview for you(:

Ohh okay thanks. But I might be moving soon which means switching schools. What should I do?

Hmm, I’d read the fine print and see if the teacher has to be from your school… If it doesn’t, I’d get a phone number or email from the teacher I’d plan to ask, and ask her then if you can contact her about it later, and then contact her before you submit her number for the interview. You never know what the teachers’ll be like at your new school, so this gives you a bit less to worry about when you change schools, as I imagine your mind’ll be pretty busy.

Thanks you have helped me a lot! So another people thinking about going next summer?

For those of you who have attended Summer@Brown, how did you get from the airport to Brown? Did someone from the university come and meet you or did you use RIPTA or something else? I’m from Missouri, so I’ll definitely have to fly.

My mom thinks that I should go alone, but she was wondering how I will get from the airport to the campus and vise versa.

Thanks for the help!

I went there with my grandpa, we actually flew into Boston because it would be the only flight that put us there at the right time, so we rented a car and drove from the Boston airport to Brown. RIPTA does go everywhere though… It even goes to the Boston airport(: I took a cab to the airport on the way back, as they offered me the same rate as the shuttle would cost. Cabs should be available at the airport, so I’d take a cab, it was only $10 or so. Hmm, like I said, on the way there, I was with my grandpa, and on the way back I wasn’t. On the way there, I’d suggest going with someone… There are huge masses of students there, so when you’re registering, it’s nice to have someone to watch your bags, help you get them to your dorm, etc. You’ll most likely end up with a lot of luggage, as essentially, you’re going away to college. On the way back, I really don’t think it’s necessary – or even beneficial – to have someone accompany you. Although if you’re intimidated by the whole process, having someone accompany you won’t hurt.

By the way, be prepared to be scr

EliKresses: Wow, your response was so helpful!

Your experience with flying sounded crazy!

I guess I’ll have to have a major discussion with my parents.
They think that I should attend Girls State, but next summer would probably be my only opportunity to spend time at Brown.

I had to do some major… Conversating, with my parents. I’d say begging, but I really didn’t beg. I really never ask my parents for anything, well, except onion rings, I have an obsession with them… So it wasn’t overly difficult to get what I wanted this once, since I just wanted permission, not money (my grandparents offered to pay for it).

If I were convincing my parents, some things I’d bring up would be… The value of experiencing college life, especially college life at Brown, if it’s one of the top schools on your list, and by college life, I mean living in a dorm, possibly with a roommate, learning to use your spare time constructively, general money management skills, such as shopping for both what you want and what you’ll need (think laundry soap, going to the post office, etc.); the value of completing college-level assignments and the introduction you get to the college teaching-style; the fact that it’s summer, and everyone should have a little fun, of course; and the value of the program to help you see what you’re looking for in the college search and admissions process, whether Brown figures into it or not.

By the way, yeah, my experience with flying was pretty crazy, but when I got back to my grandparents house, I feasted. Had a whole large carton of chicken fried rice, half a large carton of stir-fried vegetables, 3 protein shakes, 6 popsicles, half a carton of Whoppers malted milk balls, and most of a bottle of grape juice (can you picture someone who’s 5’3" and only weighs 115 pounds putting all this food away?). That was my reward for not going back and telling that man on the plane off… Me and the British lady were both very quietly griping about him to each other haha. But I didn’t go tell him off, as nice as it would’ve been… He was pretty rude to the kid and his mom… Ticked me off. My mom’s dead, but if he was that rude to her, we’d have trouble. So yeah, my trip back was interesting, but I got back fine, and very hungry, so whatever(:

And hah, I know, I have to include every personal and irrelevant detail about everything, but it’s late and I’m bored, so I just do. Sorry for writing a narrative, but hey, at least I separate my narratives from the informational part of my posts, so that way you can ignore my narratives if you so choose…

Chelsea, how long are you thinking about going to brown? Like how many weeks? I’m trying to decide how long I should go.

Justdancecy: I think I’ll only go for a week. It’s kind of expensive and I don’t want my parents to have to pay more than $3000.

EliKresses: Brown is actually my first choice and I’m definitely going to apply ED (well, as of right now I am).

My mom wants me to become more independent and this is the perfect way to do it.

I want to experience Brown in person. Like I told my mom, I might not like being 1,500 miles away from home. I might be happy with going to a local university, but I highly doubt that that will be the case.

Your story is interesting. It’s unique.

I’m so sorry about your mom, though. :(

It’s alright, well, as alright as it’ll ever be. She died about 8 years ago, by the way. Hah, dunno’ why I’m telling this to strangers online, but ohh well.

And since Brown’s your first choice; especially since it’s where you intend to apply ED, then yeah, you’re definitely going to want to visit in person haha, and spending a week or two (or longer) is definitely much better than just taking a campus tour.

By the way, I’m sure your RA’ll tell you, but it only gets that hot at Brown in the summer, and they hardly have any undergraduates there during the sunmer, so that’s why they don’t have air conditioning in the dorms, because it’s not needed year-round. Just letting you know, in case your RA is one that hardly ever talks to you, I don’t want something stupid to scare you off from your first choice. Best of luck with your parents(: if they know it’s your first choice and they think you have a shot there, then convincing them shouldn’t be too hard, I’d venture(:

Chelsea, you know they have scholarships for summer@brown.

Thank you both! I do know that they have scholarships, so I’m just waiting to apply.

I’m from Missouri and this summer, the average temperature was about 102 degrees, so it must be cooler than in Rhode Island! :)

Omg I’m from Texas. Our high was like 110 degrees. Ugh!! Haha it was TERRIBLE.

JustDancecy: I just realized that the last sentence of the post above yours makes no sense. I meant “that” instead of “than”.

Yeah, I hate hot weather! I think I would love SoCal.

Me too! Haha it wasn’t even fun to do something outside because it was too hot! So how old are you?

You can’t set up an account until the application comes out for the new term! I think the apps come out in December or something …

Justdancecy: I won’t say because then everyone would know, but I’m in high school, so that narrows it down.

Sorry, I don’t like to give out too much information.

Chelsea: Its fine I understand
