summer classes at UCB

Anyone here (non UC/UCB student) taking summer classes at UCB? Or any other UC?

I just registered for 1 class (waiting to get a loan for the rest). The class has 4 spots left and it said that I would receive my confirmed class schedule within two weeks. Does this mean that I'm definitely in the class and it just has to process, or that if 4 UCB students decide to register before my app goes through I'll be waitlisted?

And anyone else that wants to share their UC summer session/registration experience...go for it.

Hmmm… I wish I could help you regarding your question.

But tomorrow I plan on registering for two summer classes at Cal: MATH110 and PACS10. :)

If I get into Cal I’ll be taking an anthropology and evolution class. Obviously I will be registering pretty late, so if I can’t get in those classes, I’ll find a CCC that has them open and available.

I’ve considered paying the 150$ (or whatever it is) to register for summer classes now, but I’ll look and feel pretty foolish if I don’t get accepted.

I may also take Psych or Phil classes over summer. You’re taking a phil class at UCB over summer, right Cantabilen?

@emilsinclair9- I’m taking 4…12a, 25a, 25b, and 108. It doesn’t look like 25b or 108 will fill up by April 30th, so you’re definitely fine waiting it out (at least for now, keeping an eye on the website) till you can register as a ucb student if you aren’t set on taking a specific class. It’s a lot more than 150, btw, visiting students pay 385 registration fee and 320/unit, whereas UC students pay 110 and 292/unit. Don’t count on CCC being backup-most of them have cut summer session and I doubt any of them would have an anthropology and evolution class available, I’d assume the remaining summer sessions would just have the super basic stuff.

Wow, that’s amazing. 4 summer classes, esp at UCB, I would imagine is intense. I will probably sign up for a UCB anthro and 12a/25b in the summer if I get in.

It would be cool if we had a class together; keep me posted on what you end up registering for and I’ll do the same (if I get in…keeping fingers crossed lol).

Whao… You’re taking four summer classes at UCB? You are brave!!

Yes, UCB summer school is very expensive for us transfer students. I’m paying nearly $3,000 for two (4 unit each) classes. But this is the only way I could ensure I would finish my prerequisites before transferring.

Why are you taking so many summer courses?

12a, 25a, and 25b are prereqs that aren’t offered at my CC. I downloaded all of the lecture notes/hw assignments/other stuff for 12a from the professor’s website, and I’ve already been teaching myself the material and have started the hw. I’ve been listening to itunes U for 25a (ancient philosophy), and I also have been reading/listening to audiobooks for the reading. Same with 25b, I’ve already begun reading. And I was able to get the syllabus and all the essay assignments for 108 so I can get a head start on that too.

So I don’t think it’ll be too bad, 8 units per 6 week session and I’ve already done some of the work. I’m just anxious to get these classes out of the way, especially because I’ll be working for almost all of next year.

Cantabilen, just to be clear… 8 units in a 6 week session is equivalent to 20 in a Berkeley semester… just to put things in perspective. But it looks like you are serious about it and are getting as prepared as you can and some people can handle that sort of thing (i know i can’t).

I am a philosophy major hoping to transfer to berkeley, and summer classes are looking pretty attractive for financial reasons.

CantabilenApathy— are you already a Berkeley student? or did you just pay the extra fees to sign up for a class as a visiting student?

I want to take the 12a, 25a, and 25b in the summer as well. I have already taken a logic class and am now tutoring for logic in my community college, so i think i feel ok taking that and another course at the same time.

I’m a bit concerned about the making it in the classes though. Do you know how long the registration has been open for the summer?

Maybe i should just register for classes as a visiting student, as it would still be cheaper than a regular semester (if i did the calculations right). You think i can register as a visiting student, then, if i get accepted, I can pay less? Seems like that shouldn’t be able to happen… but worth a try. Or maybe sign up now and then drop if i get accepted and sign up again? Do you know how much it would cost to drop out and get a refund?

Also, the first 6 weak session starts something like 4 days after my semester ends!!! I would have to find a place to stay while i’m still here.

I’ve been trying to figure out what the reading would be in those classes. How did you get the reading for 25a and 24b? Did you just kinda guess because you know which philosophers are going to be covered, or which readings were covered by other teachers in the past?

I have the exact same questions as absurdmike. I also want to know about the registration process and how you know the readings and hw already. Cantabilen, you are way ahead of us. Nice job figuring everything out, and thanks in advance!

i e-mailed the teachers in the first summer session for 25a and 25b. Vanessa de Harven, the teacher for 25a just sent me a draft of her syllabus, so that was easy. The other teacher hasn’t contacted me yet, but i only e-mailed them last night. So i would try that =)

(that is if you can’t find it on some website somewhere)

I get my info from spending too much time on the internet, and a little common sense. Mostly too much time online.

25a- the lectures from a previous class (not the same professor this summer, although I believe one of them was a GSI for this class) are on itunes U. Listen to them! I feel so productive listening to those podcasts on my way to school haha. The podcasts are also labeled (although a few from the beginning are missing), so that’s how I figured out the readings.
Plato’s Euthyphro, Crito, Apology, Meno, Phaedo, The Republic
Aristotle’s Nicomachaen Ethics, Posterior Analytics, Physics, Categories, and De Anima (on the soul)
Since this professor is not the professor for summer session, these are not set in stone. I could definitely imagine Aristotle’s Politics being required, for example.
But, if you want to get ahead, I recommend reading Euthyphro (a short dialogue), The Republic, and Nicomachaen Ethics now. The last two are long, but if you read books 1-5 for both really well you’ll be well off. Those are the most important books (for this class anyway), so if you have a good understanding of those the rest will be easier, and the later books aren’t covered nearly as much as those.

25b- I found a syllabus. All of the readings had to do with knowledge. I don’t know if that’ll be the case for all 25b classes, since the 25a class sampled a lot (ethics, political philosophy, logic, etc). Descartes’s Meditations will almost definitely begin the class, so if you want to get ahead, read that (along with “objections and replies”). Berkeley, Hume, Kant, they’ll all definitely be covered, and if you’re brave, try reading one of their works concerning knowledge/human understanding. But again, a different professor might teach differently so you may end up reading the “wrong” essay. so go at your own risk.

12a- there are 2 logic classes over the summer, one taught by Fitelson, one by a grad student. This was actually the reason for this thread lol, I went to fitelson.org and downloaded ALL of his lecture powerpoints, hw assignments (and began working on them), handouts, EVERYTHING. There are only 2 spots in Fitelson’s class left (24 in the other 1), and I want to know if I got a spot when I registered, or if I’ll get one when my app goes through. AHHH! Anyway, so that’s how I got that stuff.

regarding registration- I’m not a Berkeley student, I want to transfer Fall 2011 (I’ll have 50 credits by the end of this spring), and I want to establish myself at that school and get my prereqs done.
should you wait to be accepted? maybe not for the logic class. Keep your eye on the schedule and see if they look like they’ll fill up (Fitelson’s logic class is almost full). Right now logic is 38/40 and 16/40, ancient is 15/40 and 14/40, and modern is 5/40 and 5/40. Do NOT pay visiting fees to secure your 25b spot lol- I’m pretty sure it’ll still be there come April 30.
Registration has been open since Feb 1 for UC students, and Feb 16 for all other students.
You lose some fee if you withdraw from your classes, I’m not sure how it works completely financially. I do know that if you register as a visiting student, the class will still count toward your UC GPA and your Cal transcript. I also know that because of budget cuts, everyone’s short staffed. So there’s a greater chance of you getting a flat “no” if you try to switch your status to get reduced fee. Also, you have to pay up front for visiting students, so I doubt they’re just going to refund $400 because you changed statuses. But you can always try.
Also, when you register as a UCB student you do it through telebears…so you get instant confirmation you’re in the class and not constantly checking your email to see your “confirmed class schedule”

Thank you for all of your information and insight Cantabilen! I really appreciate it. That not only answered pretty much everything, but outlined the differences between visiting and UCB students.

If I register for 2 classes now, and assuming I get into them, can I still drop them and get partial or full refund if I have to drop them for a research opportunity or don’t get into Berkeley?

My CCC also doesn’t offer any of the phil prereqs, so I intend to get them done over the summer if I’m accepted.

Also, do these summer courses really begin on May 24th? I was looking at an anthropology course offered, and it says it goes from May 24th to July 2nd or something. My semester, however, ends after that date. Are these dates accurate? Or am I unclear on when these 6 week sessions begin?

yep… that’s when it starts. Well at least the summer session i am thinking of. There are something like 6 or 7 summer sessions.

Perhaps you could take your finals early? that would probably only help though if they overlapped for a few days.

If you cancel your registration, as in drop the classes before class starts, you get a full refund minus 100 dollars. i think 'tis worth it.

soo im trying to decide whether i should travel this summer or take a summer course at either berkeley or stanford. since it looks like you guys are deciding on going to berk for summer school I cant help but join the bandwagon :P

It’s all good SFwarrior…I mean I temporarily hijacked your thread, so I suppose you could temporarily go to summer school with us. haha I’m just kidding, of course.

But seriously though, it’d be pretty interesting if we all did and/or had classes together.

What classes are you looking into SFwarrior? I’m planning on a mix of anthro, evolution, and philosophy…maybe chem too.

Of course, not all of them, but maybe 2 out of the 4 ^^.

@emilsinclair- you lose a deposit, but i think you get most of your money back as long as you drop before classes start. it’s all on summer.berkeley.edu btw

So the “$385 one-time Enrollment Fee.”… Does that mean that i have to pay it for only one of the two summer sessions? If I get accepted to Berkeley would I have to pay it again in the fall?

no, that’s for visiting student summer sessions. I don’t know what regular semester fees are for students. If you register for the summer as a visiting student, you pay it once, regardless of session.

I would like to take IAS 45 but its so expensive! I’m gonna wait to see if I get in and if I do, then I’ll sign up.
