Hey guys, I have a couple quick questions regarding summer school.

On my application and UCB app update, I specified that I intend to take 3 phil courses that aren't offered at my CCC at a nearby community college.

However, I ended up just registering for UCB summer sessions for 2 Psychology courses, instead.

I applied as a Philosophy major, and specified in my PS that I intend to double major, but will it look sketchy that I applied as a phil major, but am taking 2 psych courses over summer at UCB?

These 3 phil classes are prereqs and I have none of them done, but like I said none of them are offered at my CCC. Thus, I was going to take them over summer, but I had a change of heart, and decided I'd rather take a couple Psych courses over summer.

Maybe I'm just being paranoid lol. I mean I'm basically saying that my summer school choices now may negatively affect my chance for admission. Although, I did say I was taking phil....and instead I'm taking Psych.

Should I notify UCB and any other UC's about these summer changes? Will it look even sketchier if I do? I just don't want to come off like I'm "back-dooring" into the Psych major at UCB or something. I really want to double major, and that's why I want to finish the Psych prereqs over summer and then phil prereqs in the fall.

If anybody can help me, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks guys.

note that you cannot take phil 25b during the fall. That being said, I don’t think it would be wise for you to do all 3 phil prereqs during your first semester anyway.

Why don’t you take one of each? Also, if you specified that you were going to take 3 phil classes, and ended up taking 2 psych prereqs, you could at least use financial reasons to somewhat explain your change. Especially if the psych prereqs are 3 unit classes (because the phil classes are 4 units).

yes a little paranoid,
if you are a UC transfer, you definitely have a high if not guaranteed admission into the UC’s and taking psych instead of phil won’t really change anything, just get A’s in them:)

@ CantabilenApathy: That’s a good point. Only thing is I’m not in a low income bracket or anything. Do you think I should notify the UC’s of this change though?

Yes, the 2 psych prereqs are 3 units, which will help, however, now I’m starting to regret my schedule already lol.

I think it would probably have been smarter to do one of each…Is it still possible to change classes/my schedule even though I already paid?

I want to stick with Genetics and Society, but maybe drop Developmental Psychopathology. In exchange, I would add Phil 12A or something…or basically whichever phil prereq would fit with my schedule at this point.

Let me know what you think, Cantabilen! Also, thanks for the help!

@ samd1993: Yeah, I have TAG’s to all of the UC’s I applied to, and you’re right, I have guaranteed admission there.

However, my dream school is Berkeley, and hardly anyone…or at least the vast majority of applicants do not have a “very high or guaranteed admission”…especially considering UCB only accepts ~33% of applicants.

if the psych prereqs are 3 units each, then you’re perfectly fine. It doesn’t matter what income bracket you’re in, you’re paying out of pocket for these classes right now. So while you intended on taking 12 units of phil, right now you are sticking with 6 units of psych. If phil classes are still open later, you may switch. That’s what I’d tell them.

And you can totally change classes without losing money. If you are serious about double majoring, I would definitely do one of each, or do the two psych classes plus a phil class. You do realize that you have 18 units of major PREREQS right now- you want to get done with those asap.

whats funny is that my philosophy teacher said not to major in philosophy cuz it rakes in no money lol

@ Movingunit: That’s not true at all.

FYI - Most premeds are phil majors…successful premeds receive MD’s.

A standard BA in philosophy, however, with no post-grad plans, isn’t directly applicable to any jobs other than maybe a phil professor or researcher of some sort. Either way, it’s fine to major in philosophy either way.

We’re young, this is college, and we should do what we enjoy.

@ CantabilenApathy: So if I wanted to, I could literally swap classes right now? For example, I could switch dev. psychopathology for phil 12A or something? I mean I’d have to pay for the extra unit, but is this possible to do asap?

If so, how can I go about doing it? I will have my prereqs done by the end of the fall for sure. Yeah, it would be smartest to do one of each for now though…Possibly 2 psych and a phil.

yeah kinda. I’m not sure if you can do it online. I tried to add a class online but it didn’t work- I have to go into admin to do it. You might be able to, but I’m not sure.
