Summer Classes?

I’m going to be a first year student for the Fall semester at a CSU and I want to get a head start this Summer and take a class at a community college. I won’t be doing anything so I might as well get a class out of the way. The problem is, I have no idea what class I should take and if it would even be beneficial for my major. Our orientation isn’t for another month so I really don’t know who to ask for this type of stuff.

Sorry for the noob question but I really have no idea at all! All help is appreciated!

Call the school you plan to attend and discuss this with them. They may have some suggestions.

Use http://www.assist.org to see what courses at your nearby community colleges will count for subject credit at the CSU.

For example, if you want to major in CS at SJSU, and your local community college is Mission College, consider taking one of the courses listed here:
http://web2.assist.org/web-assist/report.do?agreement=aa&reportPath=REPORT_2&reportScript=Rep2.pl&event=19&dir=1&sia=MISSION&ria=SJSU&ia=MISSION&oia=SJSU&aay=15-16&ay=16-17&dora=COMPSCI

You can also look up general education information:
http://web2.assist.org/web-assist/report.do?agreement=aa&reportPath=REPORT_2&reportScript=Rep2.pl&event=21&dir=1&sia=MISSION&ria=SJSU&ia=MISSION&oia=SJSU&aay=15-16&ay=16-17&dora=CSUGE

If you expect AP or IB credit, you may want to check to make sure that you do not unnecessarily duplicate the credit:
http://web2.assist.org/web-assist/report.do?agreement=aa&reportPath=REPORT_2&reportScript=Rep2.pl&event=21&dir=1&sia=MISSION&ria=SJSU&ia=MISSION&oia=SJSU&aay=15-16&ay=16-17&dora=CREDIT+EX

Others may be able to help you better if you name the CSU and CC, specify your (intended) major(s), and describe what credit (e.g. AP or IB) you may already have, and what level of English and math placement you are likely to have.

Thanks a lot for the information.

I’ll be attending SJSU and the community college I have in mind is De Anza. My major is Computer Science and I took and passed the AP exam for Calculus AB.

You may wish to choose courses listed here to fulfill requirements for your major:

http://web2.assist.org/web-assist/report.do?agreement=aa&reportPath=REPORT_2&reportScript=Rep2.pl&event=19&dir=1&sia=DAC&ria=SJSU&ia=DAC&oia=SJSU&aay=15-16&ay=16-17&dora=COMPSCI

Or choose courses which fulfill general education requirements.

http://artic.sjsu.edu/static/catalog/ap.html indicates that a 3 or higher on AP calculus AB fulfills Math 30 at SJSU. This older Math 30 course page has some exams to try to check your knowledge: http://www.math.sjsu.edu/~hsu/courses/30/

Remember that college math courses will cover material at a faster pace than high school calculus AB.
