Summer/Fall 2015 Transfer Thread

Do dual credit hours count toward your 30 hour transfer requirement?

@Kyotoraz I do believe that they do as long as you achieved at least a ‘C-’ or better in them.

@ashh18 COLA has the lowest GPA “requirement” though they do place heavy emphasis on strength of essays, recommendations, and extracurricular. At a 2.85 it’s going to be a bit difficult but when you send your transcripts for this semester with a 3.3, you’ll have a much better chance. I had been recommended to strive for a 3.5+ for COLA History by admissions staff.

@MathMeany I did not see anything about having to be rejected and then appeal but I’m not seeing anything else regarding the process of using the Academic Fresh Start so it’s not out of the question that the reject/appeal process is the method. It’s been mentioned earlier in this thread though that they do recognize large gaps and consider that in the application review, so hopefully no worries about this anyway!

Hey y’all! I’m applying for Fall 2015 transfer admission (currently a sophomore). Like most of you guys, I’m super super nervous about my application decision :frowning: so much that I’m currently procrastinating by researching UT transfer admission related things. :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyway, here are my “stats”:

•College transferring from: University of Massachusetts at Boston (Communication Studies major)
•Current GPA: 3.964 (got two damn A-'s last semester -.-)
•College applied for: Moody School of Communication
•1st choice: RTF
2nd choice: English in COLA (:S I didn’t know what to put! It’s currently my minor)
•Quality of essays: Well, I think they are pretty good. It was a very difficult process, but I think I did well. Writing is a strength of mine.
•# of letters of rec and who wrote them: 2 letters of rec. One from my film professor, the other from a professor I did a peer mentoring program with (also took her class).
•list of volunteer/extracurricular activities: This is kind of my weakness. I have not volunteered much… I have a few hours of community service from high school. I did a lot of EC stuff in high school but my school, being a commuter university, doesn’t have a lot in the way of EC opportunities. There are some but they are pretty dull. I also have a part time job, so it’s a bit hard. I don’t know what this counts as, but I did a peer mentoring program at my university. Basically, I took a class during my first semester of college that all/most freshman have to take (critical writing, you know the type) and over winter break my professor offered me the opportunity to be a “peer mentor” for the same course the following semester, but one level lower than what I took - pretty rare for a freshman! Anyway, the role of a peer mentor is to help students acclimate to the college coursework/atmosphere as well as aid them in class activities and work. It’s not really a tutor, or a TA, but… it has a few similar qualities? Haha. Sorry if that’s vague, it’s kind of hard to explain.

sigh I’m really worried about not getting in! I used to live in TX (College Station), and I even lived in Austin for a year, so it’s really like home for me. All of my childhood best friends are there and I just visited them for spring break last week. I could really see myself living there :slight_smile: My worry is that RTF is quite competitive so I won’t get in… but I’ve won my share of photography awards as well as a couple film ones from my high school’s film fest award ceremony thing. Wow, this is a lot longer than I initially thought! Now to get back to homework…

Hey guys! I really need help for external transferring into Mccombs, for the business indicator courses, does UTD’s Applied Calc I and II count? I have the AP credit for Calc I, but for Calc II, i took Applied Calc II at UTD, and it transfers as M 303L to UT… Will this work?

Hows a 3.9 GPA for CNS chemistry?

@summeroo‌

Finally another RTF hopeful!

I’m applying to RTF for Fall 2015 as well. I’m a little worried because my GPA is a little low at a 3.61 according to UT’s cumulative transfer GPA. You might want to check my status to see your official GPA UT calculated for you.

Anyways here are my stats:

Tarrant County College
3.61 - 51 Hrs. (Two of the B’s are my high school dual credit which people claim they are somewhat forgiving of…)
Applying to Moody School of Communication
1st Choice - RTF
2nd Choice - COLA Undeclared
Very strong first essay. Great second essay.
3 Letters of Rec. w/ two being from audio/video production teachers

Resume:

My third short film (Cigarette Burns) was part of the official selection for the 2013 SXSW Film Fest. Also played at another festival in New York. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wR-980c48Y

Raised over $3,000 via Kickstarter to shoot my newest short film, Wither, Eve, Wither.

Eagle Scout with 200+ Volunteer Hours

I hope UT will look at my film experience and forgive my lower GPA…

@summeroo‌ You have a very solid GPA! That’s going to be especially important because since you’re OOS. Just hang in there! @camgard‌ is another RTF hopeful on this thread as well. We need to ban together!

@cdctransfer‌ where do I find the GPA that UT calculated on the MyStatus page? I can’t seem to find it. I do postproduction sound by the way. If you ever need any dialog editing or sound design lemme know!

@cdctransfer Although your GPA may be just a tad weak, you definitely make up for in your resume! I mean, wow, your films have played at festivals and you have a kickstarter - and look at those volunteer hours! I have to say, it makes me feel like a lazy slob! I’d love to talk with you about film unrelated to UT if you’d like!

Honestly, if you don’t get into the RTF major I think you will at least get admitted into the school from there - then you can work on boosting up the GPA and changing your major to RTF once you’re actually in the school. Though UT puts a lot of weight on GPA, if you are going into a major you’ve had a lot of experience in already it will help you a lot, I think. Keep me updated on the decision.

Side note: Do you know when we find out? I’m hoping before June so I can get a decent lease.

@summeroo‌ People that have met the 30 hour requirement will probably find out April or early June. If you’re currently completing the 30 hour requirement I’ve heard you find out near mid June.

Do ap exams that were accepted at a college count as part of the 30 hours?

@Toastyful See www.utexas.edu/student/admissions/ate/problems/cbe.html .

Thanks for the link, so what I’m understanding is they do.

But the part that worries me a bit is “Students with transfer credit originally awarded on the basis of a national test (AP, CLEP, IB, SAT Subject/SAT II, etc.) will not be granted credit-by-exam at UT Austin based on the same examination.”

Is that just saying it won’t be counted twice?

@camgard wow! Another Bostonian (I go to UMB) looking to transfer to UT as an RTF major! Yeah, I thought RTF was one of the most transferred majors to UT but now I am not so sure because of all of the business people. I wonder how competitive it is. I think 3.82 is still pretty good. I have a 3.96, and after going on here I am a little insecure because it seems as though everyone has a 4.0! sigh But I think you have a pretty good resume. I am not sure how much more selective they are towards OOS applicants rather than residents, but I’d say we both have a pretty good chance! (though my resume could use some more work :frowning: )

@MathMeany‌ For everyone who wants to know the GPA UT has calculated for you here are the steps:

  1. Log in to My Status
  2. Click on the farthest tab on the right titled "Financial Aid"
  3. Click "Apply Online"
  4. On the far left click "Begin My Application"

The first window that pops up will show the amount of hours UT will accept from the transcripts you have sent and the GPA calculated from those accepted hours. My UT GPA is a 3.61 while at my university it is a 3.66. So they do recalculate your GPA!

Hopefully this is helpful for some!

@cdctransfer
Do you know when they update this? Currently it just says 0 for the number of transfer credit hours and 0.00 transfer GPA for me. They have my college transcripts and I know I got credit for all my classes.

@summeroo honestly its a weirdly small world. good luck to you! that GPA is amazing!

Do you know how they calculate gpa? Like at my current university I have a 3.6 and am projected to make a 4.0 this spring but on UT mystatus, I have a 2.5 which I don’t understand. I made a 4.0 last semester and have never failed a class so I don’t understand how its a 2.5 according to them.

@lulu613 Have you ever failed classes in the past? As in maybe dual credit didnt go so well because they count that in. Other than that I would definitely call and see what is going on.

No, I haven’t which is why I am so confused. I made a C once and that was it. I am definitely going to call them in the morning because that is terrifying!

While checking my GPA through MyStatus, I realized that it also said my status was a “freshman”. I have about 50 credits, 53 if you count an AP credit from high school. I am also taking 16 credits this semester which are in progress. Any ideas as to why this might be? Perhaps they already determine which credits will transfer from my university, and it’s not enough bring me to sophomore status? Hm.
