So I applied as a transfer to UT as a journalism major after my freshman year at UNT (last year) and got in with about a 3.5 GPA. However, I ended up turning it down because opportunities arose at UNT that I just couldn’t pass up. Halfway through this year (my sophomore year) I decided I wanted to apply again and go this time. My GPA is about the same, and my resume is better than this time last year because of those opportunities I took at UNT. Ended up submitting three letters of recommendation as well. Do I have anything to worry about as far as not getting in again? Everyone I’ve talked to said I should be fine, but I can’t help but be paranoid.
@Yoohooos, @JD1327 Thank you for the replies–I guess we’re all in the same boat Talked to admissions, they told me the average GPA for transfers who were accepted to engineering last fall was 3.89–that’s pretty high so…:-w I just wish I could use Fresh Start during the initial application rather than during an appeal but, it is what it is–I’ll just have to wait and see…

@MathMeany That’s pretty high, but if you’re applying to the less competitive engineering majors the GPA difference probably won’t be as bad since PetE or ChemE applicants were probably all/close to 4.0’s. I e-mailed an engineering advisor who I saw this past winter break and she told me that for ECE, “a competitive applicant should be aiming for a 3.7 or higher.” There’s also the resume, essays, etc. to take into account, so I wouldn’t necessarily say you have a 0% chance!
Hey guys, I saw your thread on thought you u might be able to help me a bit i
I hope! Just a heads up, I’ve obviously already applied to UT for fall 2015… I just need to turn in my final transcript aftet this semester as I do jot have 30 hours complete until the end of the semester.
Here are my stats:
-Collin County Community College
-GPA: 4.0 (also expceted after this semester)
-College of natural sciences/College of engineering
-Computer Science (1st choice)
-Electrical/Computer engineering (2nd choice)
-I got my essay edited and the feedback i got said it was really good.
-No recommendations as the only classes I had completed at the time were like social sciences and English, no math or programming classes done until the end of the current semester.
- A good amount of EC'S from college and High School
Let me know what yall think!!
•College transferring from: UTA (CAP)
•Current GPA: 3.529, Expected GPA: 3.76.
C in Calc 2, but should be getting a 4.0 this semester. I come in with loads of AP classes (14) and ALL of their recommended courses (Physics, Chem, Economics, Calc, you name it).
•College applied for: Cockrell
•1st Petroleum Engineering
2nd Undeclared (I’m a CAP student)
•Essays: I’d say medium, I think I have some good stuff in there but they aren’t exceptional as I would want them to be. I don’t know if I did the right thing, I took a stab, but I included that I knew a lot of petroleum engineers that had graduated from UT and that they had helped me decide on what to do and what to study and if it was really for me (they gave me some nice contacts too). Basically I wrote how I knew exactly what I was getting into and knew that it was the right thing for me, both the program and the school. Additionally, I told them that I knew someone who owned an oil company and another that was high up in one and they both already verbally agreed that I could go down for an internship during the summer if I got in the program (one is an internship that they know very well in Austin since they send several of their students each year and the company is quite big, really competitive I hear).
•Rec Letters: 4 Letters, 3 from high school teachers (which were also submitted last year) and one from Chemistry Professor which should be really solid.
•Lots of work: soccer coach, tutor, translator.
ECs are pretty good, 50+ hours of volunteering, bible classes, club soccer and volleyball. Several awards including National AP Scholar, UIL Academic team (made Regionals), Freshman Honor Roll, Honor Society, community service award, leadership classes and recognition.
Despite not having the GPA I wanted, I think a 3.76 might just make the 3.8 cut that’s usually their average. I also went down and spoke with the actual program counselor, not the perspective one, but the real deal one. She gave me nice pointers that really helped. Like I said, I have all of their recommended courses and beyond those really. 14 AP classes, great ECs, really improved my resume from when I applied last year. Plus, I made it really clear I know what I’m getting into and that UT and Reservoir PetE is the program that I want.
What do you guys think?
@Daniele96 sorry to be harsh but imo you have little to no chance of getting into Pet E , cause people with 4.0’s get rejected from Pet E , the internal transfer average is 3.9 , and external is usually harder so i don’t think you have a chance , but you can get lucky somehow and get in . Sorry though for being harsh
@umark96 do you have calc 2 ? and Engineering Physics 1 + Lab? . Considering CS is one of the hardest majors to get into if not the hardest , i can’t say your chances are practically guaranteed , but you do have a chance since you have a 4.0. If you have Calc 2 and Engineering Physics 1 + Lab , you have a good chance of getting into ECE as a backup
@MyLonghorn I dont have calc 2 or physics + lab yet… Im in calc 1 and im taking Biology +lab for my second science course. I’ll be taking calc 2 and physics next semester. I’m basically relying on the 4.0 at this point, but you’re right, CS is pretty difficult to get into at UT so my hopes aren’t that high…
Thanks for you help tho!
@umark96 you should try to switch your second major as cockrell won’t consider you till have calc 2 so you should change it some viable option imo
So I called admissions today and asked when the first transfer decisions will start go out, and I was told May 1st… I really hope it wont be that long!
@ecollin WTF!? You gotta be April foolin right!?
@Daniele96 That C in Cal2 is no bueno
@mathmeany I really wish that I was… However, if that is the case this would be the latest the decisions have been starting to go out ever (lol I have a lot of free-time and have looked at the threads from the past year.) I really hope this is something they say for the applicants to stop calling them. All other years, decisions have been going out around second week of April.
Many different people on the forum have spoken to admissions and have gotten numerous answers. I don’t think any certain person in admissions knows per say. We will just have to wait and see. My bet is that they start releasing admissions in the next week or so.
@MyLonghorn Don’t worry about it! You need people to be harsh in life. Thanks for your time! What I’m really hoping for is that the fact that I took CAP and will have a 4.0 second semester I’ll be able to show I’m cut out for it, along with the ECs I have. We’ll see though, like you said, it’ll be a huge stretch and I can only hope that they like me.
@MathMeany that’s exactly what the PetE advisor said. She told me that if I were to transfer with only that C I would not make it in and not even bother in transferring later. Basically it was an A in Calc 3 or nada. She was also keen on telling me that an internal transfer would be much better and that, if I don’t make it in then, she would be able to help me with take some PetE classes if I decided on doing Mechanical, something I would probably get in to.
I’m headed to Austin on Friday for some housing stuff, if anyone has any questions that they would want me to ask I’ll gladly report back the answer to them. I’ll drop by the perspective student center, meet with my other counselor then meet with my PetE counselor, one of them is bound to know something. I know that as a CAP student, my admission decision isn’t until June so I’ve got a long way to go
I unofficially heard from an admissions counselor that they reserve some places for CAP students who declare they want to externally transfer since the admission decision comes later so I really hope that is the case.
By the way, when I asked about the transfer GPA for PetE they said it ranges from 3.7-3.8 from year to year, all depending on the applicant pool. I have heard about the 4.0 stuff but I really haven’t seen it anywhere official.
So I just went back, edited and resubmitted my essays because I switched my primary major a few weeks ago. The changes went through but I wonder if they’ll actually even use the new version since we’re well past the deadline
I actually need to look into housing thats definitley off of campus (Probably West Campus). What prices should I expect? I have one very good friend who is CAP student that if i get accepted I will be rooming with. So if anyone could give me and idea that would be great.
Hi I’m currently trying to transfer from TCC into the RTF program. My accumulated GPA is 3.75 but I looked on a section in the scholarship area and it lists me as a 3.58? It also looks like it only lists 64 credits even though I have more.
Anyhow I have a letter of recommendation and two strong essays with a decent resume. I’m 27 and have less accolades to mention due to my full time job. I did mention some extra curriculars and some volunteer work I did in collaboration with my place of work.
My question is do I stand a decent shot at RTF with the oddly dropped 3.58 GPA?
How does that work for those of us who are currently working on the 30 in progress hours and are not in CAP? Do they just reserve a small ammount of places for us since the decision isn’t until June? Or do they make the decision early and then confirm your acceptance when you send your final transcript?
