Summer/Fall 2015 Transfer Thread

@JD1327‌ Yes I believe they do. At your current university they will not affect your GPA but they will effect your “transfer” GPA. I am in the same boat but fortunately my dual credit GPA was pretty good.

Well there goes my 4.0. If you want to calculate your overall GPA, do you add the hours/points you earned in dual credit to your college GPA and average it all together?

Well, I’m pretty much screwed. Adding my dual credit transcript to my college transcript (assuming I get all A’s this semester), I’m left with a 3.73 GPA as opposed to a 4.0. This probably isn’t good enough for Cockrell. All I can do now is hope they weigh my college GPA more significantly than my dual credit courses and refine my essays.

@JD1327‌ how many hours did you take for dual credit and what did you get on them

@MyLonghorn I took 20, and received a 3.3. cumulative GPA. It’s a mixture of A’s and B’s. Mostly B’s. This was over the course of 2 years in high school.

Like nearly all universities, UT Austin does not combine grades from transfer credit with grades earned at UT Austin to produce your internal UT Austin GPA. But the GPA you’re concerned about right now is not internal, it is the GPA computed by the admissions office for admission purposes based on transferable coursework from all prior institutions. That includes dual credit earned during high school and credit earned later.

Does anyone know if we have about the 30 hour requirement when we will hear back? Last year I believe it was mid April.

@PastePotPete‌ Do you know what other factor they put on weight in the admission process?

@Yoohooos‌ Well looking back at the spring transfer applicants it seemed like GPA wasn’t everything. Few applicants that had a GPA above 3.8 got rejected from their first choice. So it seems as if they really do look into everything else.

@Kyotoraz Yea, that’s what I thought too. Applicant with GPA above 3.7 or 3.7 got rejected, but some applicant have GPA like in 3.6 ish got into CNS. After I saw that GPA seem to be just not the real big portion of the whole decision so I called Admission office. The answer I got from them still, “We will offer the admission to the applicant who has highest GPA”. So this confused me a lot.

I don’t know after most decision came out for Spring, they just left CC, I don’t really care about it, but still didn’t see anyone in CC got into Cockrell or CS. I’m really frustrate about this. Also, on the Spring thread, there was a comment said that, “internal transfer can’t even get into CS with 4.0 GPA” I don’t know this is truth or not, but if it is, this is PAINNNNN.!!

No one got into engineering in that thread because you can’t apply for engineering in the spring semester. CS is a whole different story though.

Hey Guys! I thought I could help some of you since I know the pain:

So I transferred to UT in spring of 2015 and my goodness the waiting process is a downright pain. But if you can get through it, then I assure you that it is absolutely worth it. It seems they are using a new way of deciding admissions. Sort of another level of holistic approach I guess? I had a 3.32 and got into COLA Undeclared (granted that was my 2nd choice & CNS- Biochem was my first). Getting in with my GPA is unheard of mostly, but I guess they are really doing something different over at the admissions office here.

As far as a good backup goes, COLA Undeclared – Trust me. All I have known is that engineering/business is freaking tough. And because CS is jam packed right now, it would really take a miracle to get into it. - NOT SAYING IT CANT HAPPEN THOUGH!

I wrote 3 essays instead of the required 2, you really wanna show them you’re committed to getting into their university. I spent quite a while on my essays and I think that may have been a huge part of me getting admission here.

The best advice I can give is to work hard and early on your essays, get your friends, parents, strangers, and if your school has a writing center, get all of them to rip your essay to absolute shreds. Make sure those essays are extremely close to golden. Because after you submit them, there is nothing else left to do except wait.

The wait period will be stressful, you may call the admissions office every hour of every week and all of them will tell you the same thing, “the quickest way you will know is by constantly checking your MyStatus page.” So its not really worth it to harass them because they too are also going through the stress of picking a select few from such a wide plethora of people. And plus, the whole decision process is out of your control.

Just try to get away from it all for a while, focus on other things, keep it in the back of your mind but don’t let it overwhelm you every waking moment.

Good Luck to everyone! I hope to see many of you guys here! Hook’em! \m/

PS: I didn’t know this until Transfer orientation, but once you come here, your GPA resets. So lets say you had a 3.67 at your old school, and you transfer here to UT, your cumulative GPA would be a 0.0. Take that however you will, but I think its sort of advantageous? You get to start new here!
And for my Pre meds: Med schools will just average out your 2 GPA’s. Not sure about other majors though, sorry :frowning:

@Kooplar246‌ So for medical school would students with other majors besides pre-med not be counted for their work at another school?

Been Watching this forum for a while and I’m psyching myself out about being admitted or not.

•College transferring from - Collin Community College (30 Hours at the end of this Semester) (+12 additional AP credit hours.)

I’m a passionate individual dedicated to helping others while also growing myself, hence the many hours (Yet far from enough) that I’ve devoted purely to giving to others who are less fortunate.

Let me know what you think about my chances, and how I can improve my chances.
Thank You.

I just want to clear up the gpa thing that Kooplar said. Your gpa does not magically reset when you get into UT. What he is talking about is your UT gpa. It will start at 0 of course. If you transfer away from UT or apply to grad school, med school, etc. etc. your cumulative gpa between all academic institutions you have attended will be averaged together.

@renarka Lol, sorry if that freaked out a lot of people. Yes, that is exactly what I meant.

@kyotoraz Well you don’t really have to be pre-med to go to medical school, it just kinda helps. Basically regardless of your major, whatever post graduate line of work you would go to, wether it be med school, grad school, law school, etc. The GPA that institution would see would be the average of your past school and of UT. Pretty much what @renarka said.

@Kooplar246‌ @renarka‌ Okay thanks I know what you mean know. Kind of had me scared for a bit there

Hi guys. I was speaking with someone involved with admissions for UT at my CC’s transfer day and they said they will only score your two best essays. You are welcome to submit three but they will only score the best two. Apparently all application materials are scored and you’re assigned a dot on a plot and there is a median on the scatter plot indicating acceptance. Someone was posting about this earlier.

@xlolpx You look like you’re in very good shape! Keep it up! COLA admits the most transfer applicants out of any school so you have that going for you! I believe the average transfer GPA for COLA is around a 3.5.
