My d will need to move out of her dorm on May 11th. She has a summer fellowship at Columbia (we don’t know which dorm yet) and needs to move back in on May 28th. Back out again on Aug. 3rd and then, of course, back in again later that month for fall term. We live in Atlanta, so driving up and back to help/carry stuff each time is not reasonable. She currently is in a suite with a kitchen and hopes/expects to be in the same type of arrangement for summer, so kitchen stuff is involved (microwave, dishes, etc) as well as clothing.

Barnard res-life referred me to Despatch, a local moving and storage company, but their costs are CUH-RAZY (it would be a minimum of $420 each time they showed up!!!). I have e-mailed Summer Storage to ask them if they can be of service, but I expect that they are limited to pick up in early May and delivery in late August.

One possibility: if the room she's in isn't needed for summer programs (doubtful, if she's on the Quad), you could pay for interim housing, move once into the fellowship room when that ends, then move back into Barnard interim housing when the summer's over. I did this, and Barnard was able to move me into my new fall room for the end of summer interim, so I ended up only moving twice.

If that doesn't work, another summer I had to move off campus, so I packed up almost all of my stuff, put it in storage for the entire summer (had a friend from NJ drive in to help move my stuff into Manhattan Mini Storage), and left a few boxes/suitcases of essentials with a friend who was staying in the city continuously and lived off of that stuff over the summer. It wasn't perfect, but I had the basics and didn't really miss any of the stored stuff.

But I'm sure people more ingenious than I have come up with better ways of solving the problem.

Prime, thanks and it's great to see you back on these boards!

She is in Plimpton and has been told it will be used for summer, so leaving her stuff there is not an option (really sad since they have the same suite next year!!!).

I will check on the Manhattan Mini Storage idea and see if we can get the boyfriends to help her move in on Memorial Day or something...

heehee, thanks, though every time you see me post you should be yelling at me to get back to work. Or go out for real fun. All time here is taken directly out of one of those two categories...

Hey, Churchmusicmom, if your daughter can kick out one of her Plimpton suitemates and open up a spot for my d. instead, we'll take care of the summer storage needs, ;) (D has friends with apartments in Manhattan and nice large house in New Jersey -- so storage space is no problem -- but is currently consigned to waitlist status for housing next year, so is very much in need of a room).

Sorry! She and her suitemates were thinking about trying to add another of their friends, but did not want to leave Plimpton. Her dad asked her which of her friends she would "vote off the island" (kidding as only dads can do!) and she looked pretty horrified at the notion.

Though, they do have a pretty large storage closet in there that they jokingly called the "guest room" when they moved in....

Seriously, I truly hope your d gets a great room!
