I will be apply to the summer leadership seminar sometime soon.
I have a 3.85 GPA thus far
I received a 193 on my PSATs
I am an EMT and I am working toward my Eagle Scout Rank in the Boy Scouts (presently Life Rank)
I am in the German Nation Honor Society and Treasurer of the German Club.
I am the Co-Founder/ Co-President of the Croquet Club
I participated in the following sports:
Cross Country- 9th grade- FALL
Winter Track-9th grade- WINTER
Track-9th grade- 10th grade-SPRING
Soccer-10th grade- FALL
and a FIT program-10th Grade-WINTER
I have not earned a Varsity letter yet as I am something of a "late-bloomer" and I did not make the Soccer team this year. I got a job and now work around 3 days a week. I run on my own to keep in shape and I have no doubt in my mind that I will be fit and ready for whatever the SLS has to throw at me, but I am afraid that, as I have not yet earned a Varsity letter in a sport, i will be overlooked. What experiences have people had with the SLS admissions and how will my having a job impact my chances of getting in?

You seem to have a fair chance. Don't worry if you don't get into SLS - people still get into West Point without SLS.

SLS is not hard physically. What makes it hard is staying on your feet all day - not the actual physical training. However, keep staying in shape anyway!

I had people in my squad without a varsity letter. I had some with lower GPAs and SATs than you. What do you have math/verbal?

Good luck to you!

My verbal was a 65 and my math was a 68. I got a 60 in writing which was very surprising because I'm generally a fairly good writer. Should I consider taking the SATs before April 1st when the Apps are due?

If I were you I would go ahead and apply (due to the whole rolling admissions concept)... if you see my post, you will see your verbal scores are clearly higher than mine! lol. Good luck bud. Maybe I'll get to meet you this summer if we both make it.

I recieved my appointment packet for USMA the other day and I've never competed at a varsity level, so there's hope. :) Obviously you should keep striving for varsity, but it doesn't completely ruin your chances. And scouting looks awesome, so keep it up! Are you doing a sport this year? That's my only recommendation. Good luck guys!

CWJones411: as SLS they told me that PSATs were a deciding factor... so if you think you can do better on your SAT AND the scores will be available in time, go for it.

USMA011: Speak for yourself about the physical training! My quads have never been so sore, climbing stairs was agony.

redhead89: I'm relieved to see another appointee who is (I'm assuming) a crappy athlete! Hit me up on AIM, my sn is: the best spice

Harri-San:

You're right. I was on the 6th floor, too. Thoes stairs did suck after awhile. You had to remind me but yeah, that did suck haha.

Lol, you guys cant be too crappy if you got in already. They wouldn't take you if they didn't think you could handle it.

Let me tell you, after SLS, elevators are your best friend.

And just wait till the sewage mile! Oh bugger that was fun.

In all seriousness, SLS is something you will not forget, and it will give you a good idea as to if West Point is right for you. Given that West Point is MUCH harder than SLS, you will still have an amazing and challenging experience.

Congrats to the appointees!

SLS3P4S

"I'm relieved to see another appointee who is (I'm assuming) a crappy athlete!"

Hahahahahaha... Yay for us! :) I'm actually a distance runner, and there are only 5 females who run varsity XC... I run like crazy, but never been in the top 5. And I have basically no upper body strength, so yeah, I gotta work on that before BCT. Apparently West Point didn't care too much. I got an LOA after submitting my PCQ... had to fax in my SAT scores and transcript so they knew I wasn't lying. :) At least I know I won't be alone!!

redhead89: same here, except I'm a guy :( I do only XC and track so I too had no upper body. I've been doing a lot to get ready for usma physically... just now can I make the usma APFT minimum for pushups. yay!

My D applied for the SLS yesterday. It was a very short application. She didn't have to report her GPA just scores and class rank. Her school doesn't rank and she has no idea where she would fall. It's a small and very competive school so she estimated, I hope it doesn't hurt her.

Does anyone know what the next step is? If she makes the first cut, would she have an interview or another more detailed application?

Thanks for any help, we are very new to this process without much knowledge.

No interviews are required for SLS. She may want to reach out to her MALO in order to express how very interested she is and begin a dialogue with somebody who will be important in the entire process. If she is serious about applying to West Point, then you should get the Smallwood book, "The West Point Candidate Book". Here's a link. You can also order it from the usma.edu site from one of the stores.

Good luck! And stick around as you'll learn a lot on this board and we'll be happy to see your daughter's progress.
