I am looking for something to occupy my time this summer, like a form of internship or research. Anyone have any experience in any type of 4-8 week medicine/research program?

There is a book called "What High Schools Don't Tell You" by Elizabeth Wissner-Gross, and it lists many summer programs that look very interesting. For instance, here in Pittsburgh we have the Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Research Initiative that has high school summer internships on regenerative medicine, and the Magee Research Institute, which has high school internships on medical research... what area or city are you looking at?

I live in Texas, but I want to get out state and go to a big city, kind of like a New York, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Chicago, etc.

NYLF Medicine

Don't go to that one. the NYLF - My counselor said that they don't regard that as prestigious. Someone I know who works at a college also gave me the same reply.

^^^...It's actually very prestigious.

any good ones in CA, preferably around the Bay Area?

I don't think of it as prestigious but my D did NYLF at UCLA last summer and it was a good ( but expensive) experience.

does ne1 know of any good summer med programs in the Bay Area?

I did NYLF at UCLA last summer too. It was pretty cool. Anyways, I know that they have a session in San Francisco, so you should look into that.

how hard is it to get into NYLF?

Well some get "nominated", but I think a call and a check will do it. My D got "nominated" for the law one by a teacher. She contected them by email and asked to switch to the medicine one, and they seemed to arrange for a nomination" for that one instead. Check out their website.

NYLF isn't prestigious because anyone can get in. No one nominated me (I'm not your typical 'good' student at all) and I got invited to about 5 programs just like NYLF, all asking for 2000 dollars and 10 days of my summer. But just because it's not prestigious dosen't mean it's no good. If you want the experience, go ahead. But if you're looking for something to boost your college applications, these sorts of programs are not worth the money. You should try volunteering at a hospital near you, or doing an intership if you can find one. Those look good, and are free!

well i'm gonna be volunteering starting next month at a hospital

i can't really find many internships in the medicine field, b/c most of them r for URM and i'm Asian-American, so go figure lol

I'd like to hear about the urm ones....around here they are only for lower income. DD had to pay for hers...

For URMs, there is a program with Cornell Univ in NYcity. Not on your side of the globe though.

Word search for research programs in Cornell website.

Here's a helpful link for several programs

One more link for research programs

Thanks so much for posting the links, Pharmagirl. They were really helpful!
