Summer Orientation Cost?

D2 will be attending a small private university in the fall. She submitted her deposit, and was able to register for their June orientation program. The program is 2 days, and the students stay in the dorms for 1 night, and are given meals. Part of the program is a community service project in the local community. I was surprised when she told me that she had to pay a $200 fee for the orientation. Is this standard? D1 had her orientation right before classes started, and she stayed in her own dorm room, so Ii am not familiar with the early orientation programs.

I don’t remember the cost but UW-Madison has a summer orientation, advising and registration days held throughout the summer (as do many public U’s) which can include a dorm room, meals and the program.

A check of the UW SOAR website shows fees will be around $25 per student plus around $40 or $60 per night for a double or single dorm room per night (2 days, stay one to two nights). Plus parking fees (remember many will be close enough to drive for state schools and parents most often attend) and any fees for the Parent program (mostly separate from students and different areas for dorm). I’d guess around $100-$200 in costs.

Definitely worth it.

My kids had fees for orientation. I am guessing this covered food, and lodging.

That price is right around the price range for my orientation program. Sounds pretty standard to me.

It is about right. Since my D goes to the college university in town and they have the option to commute that save ~$50.

Yep - similar to my kid’s - it is rolled into the regular bill I think but 2 nights in the dorm

My son’s orientation cost $185 three summers ago. It was in July. There was a concurrent parent orientation as well.
