Debriefed my answering machine this am and found a message from Jobeth Moad telling us d was accepted! For some reason D's email didn't work.

Before she can make a decision she will have to talk to the head of the local pgm to see if she can work around their schedule. She is planning to do that today.

Her studio also wanted her to help with a children's summer MT program and she will have to talk to them this weekend about a work around. She is very good with little children and has been teaching in dance classes and kids musical theater workshops for some time.

We have a surplus of blessings and I hope we can work something out to attend Miami or OCU.

My D received her acceptance email yesterday, too. I was a little disappointed to find out there will be 60 participants...the original information talked about 30 students. I found out there will be 52 girls and 8 boys. They have assured me they are re-working their usual program to accomodate the extra kids and are thinking of offering two tracks of education...one for the less experienced and one for the more experienced kids. This is a program that is growing in respect and popularity so it is to be expected that they have to massage their workshop as the need arises. Knowing OCU faculty/staff like I do, I know they are working hard to provide a meaningful program for everyone involved.

My daughter is on her way to Oklahoma City this summer! She's turning down her other acceptances in favor of OCU and is so excited for the summer!! GO FOOTLOOSE (as she would write LOL)!!!

The Hyatt Coral Gables has $110 rooms (internet special, no cancellations permitted) for the final weekend, which is a great deal (rates are usually $240+). I booked 2 nights at a rate of $120, which allows you to cancel if necessary (I'm unclear at this point whether or not the program ends early enough on Sunday to allow for flights home that evening -- I'd rather pay $10 more for the flexibility to make changes to the reservation).

Sasha's mom -- thank you for having your d email my d -- that was very nice of her. :)

My D was accepted to BTP this summer as a 16 year old (just finishing sophomore year). She has been accepted to a few other programs too and we are making final decision this week. I know some people have posted about this program in the past, and can't find the posts. Does anyone have a D or S who has gone? Can you post or PM with any thoughts on the program, info that might be helpful, etc? Did they enjoy it? Did they feel it was a good learning experience? Is it mostly dance based, or did they really get singing and acting too? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

nydancemom...
the two students we know who went to BTP (one went last year, one the year prior) found it veeeery intense...and strong for dancers. (They were both dancers.) Neither has chosen to return. They had a good experience...but found it very centered in preparing for the final performance. That's our (limited) knowledge of BTP.

For more on BTP, see archives - Colleges for Musical Theater Part 31, page 3, on or about 10/22/04. BTP was one of 3 programs we were considering for our son who is a rising senior in high school now. After this archive info. and the very good info. that musicalthtrmom and others (thanks!) gave us on the OCU summer program, my son decided to apply only to OCU's program and not to BTP or to our state Governor's School program. He is happily going to OCU this summer. Also, our dance studio owner advised that BTP may be better for college students who are trying to make contacts for being in the business in NYC after graduation. Her daughter did it the last summer of college.

NYDANCEMOM:
Congrats to your D on the BTP acceptance that is no easy feat.

I did BTP last summer, I am a senior now going to Syracuse in the Fall. I loved it!!!! Working with Anne Reinking, Ben Vereen and Ken Allan (Fosse) was amazing. I had gotten into many summer programs that year CAP21, Syracuse, Walnut Hill just to name a few and chose BTP because I felt it was an opportunity I shouldn't pass up.

It is a very dance oriented program but acting, voice, audition technique and etc...are also covered very well and the majority of the attendees were in fact older and yes they do spend a good amount of time preparing for the final show, but the show is as good as any Broadway show I have ever seen. The talent there is incredible.

You didn't say what other programs she got into, but if I were her I wouldn't pass it up. She is young and has several more summers to go for the other programs.

I am the mom who asked for advice on making audition tapes a few weeks ago. Finally, we did get a tape made and our son was accepted at OCU and NYU Steinhardt for the summer pre-college sessions. Even though it is more expensive, we are going to let him go to NYU this summer. He will be a senior in HS next year and is coming from Minnesota. I know there are a couple of others here who have mentioned their S or D were also going to NYU Steinhardt. Does anyone know how many kids are in the program? Boys vs Girls? Any other info that you can pass along about the program will be helpful. Have you found anyone besides Prof Westbrooks to talk to/ask questions?

Thanks for your thoughts on BTP. We live in Syracuse! You'll love the program..we have seen nothing but excellent shows there and know at least 3 of the professors personally and they are all great and nice people too! I'm sure we'll see you in a show there before you know it!

To everyone who has provided input so far, Thanks! I went back and read the old posts. Thanks Ericsmom for telling me where to find them. And I have gotten other input through email, etc. My D has several options on the table (including Syracuse, OCU, NYSSSA, and waitlisted to UM) but will most likely attend BTP. Especially since she is only a sophomore, and plans to do a more "audition/college planning" intensive program next summer. And she will also be attending a vocal music camp for a week in August, so she will be busy! If anyone else has any input on BTP, I'd love to hear it. Thanks again-you guys are great!

Hey there everyone. I am finally done with school- goodbye junior year, and good riddance. ha. I was wondering if any UMich folk have received their letter about the placement auditions and MT specifics yet? I am curious to see what we have to prepare/bring.

So far...the list of MPulse kids on this board are:

Me, Nick (falloffstage)
(vocaldad's son)
Kate (kegosnell)
Meredith (asonofgold)
Sarah (sunkissed417)
(iloveroxy)

Two friends from my area also will be attending. Their names are David and Lauren.

I would love to get to know everyone before the program. Feel free to IM or email me anytime. We could devise stats we would like to know about everyone, and then send it around in a chain email of sorts.

Daughter just returned from 1 week Vocal Intensive at Oklahoma City University, which is the first year they have offered it. She is now smitten with the place and said that it was fantastic training and the people were great. There was lots of 1 on 1 as there was only 16 students 14f 2m Also had an RA that was a jr. MT student so she got a great orientation to many aspects of the program. For 350.00 including room and board, it was one of the best values around and I am sure the list will be long next year so apply early. Now off to Cap21 in 2 weeks and auditions starting 8 weeks after that.

Looking forward to working through this with all of you and sharing our experiences with the parents behind us. We really would not have been anywhere near this prepared if it had not been for the students and parents that have contributed here. Thanks to all!

Sounds like a great summer for your D! Just wanted to warn you that she will probably be "smitten" with more than one place as this process continues and that is all to the good. For so many of these kids, their passion for MT has limited outlets so to be with lots of people who share their dreams and and can help them achieve them, it is sooooo intoxicating! Thanks for sharing the info for others!

Noccadad - Thanks for sharing about OCU - my S in heading there for 3 weeks in July - hope his experience is just as wonderful! Maybe we'll see you at auditions.

I know this is a little late for a response, but I will be attending the steinhardt program, and I'm also just finished my junior year. I believe that there will be 36 of us there. I look forward to meeting your son in a week and a half.

I learned that there are 37 students total, only 21 in the dorm--must be some older students who have apts or local NYC kids?? In the dorm there are 16 girls and 5 guys with 14 kids under age 18. For the under 18 group there will be some planned/required activities on the weekends [Yankee stadium, museums, movies] but also free time that is unstructured. My son is 17 and wants to be able to go to TKTS for Bway shows, etc. and they indicated that if he has my permission in writing it's ok. Kids in dorms will eat out on weekends since cafeteria is closed then.
Anyone find out anything else that is helpful--Please post!
