summer reading

So I have to read either Lord of The Flies or 1984 for summer reading. Any suggestions/recommendations?

At some point, you, like all well-read students, should read both. As for which to read first: look at the plot summary to see which interests you more.

  1. Compare and contrast to the current administration.

The Lord of the Flies-- it’s an amazing book, and not particularly hard to read. If you liked ‘The Hunger Games’, compare it to that. If not, then focus on the correlation between a loss of innocence and coming-of-age, and whether the former is necessary for the latter.

So the answer is: Read both. They are both classics.

Both are amazing. I personally like 1984 more than Lord of the Flies, but I’m an Orwell fanatic.

Better yet, read 1984 and then read Brave New World.

Honestly, I’ve just got to say, read all of them. 1984, Lord of the Flies, and Brave New World. Actually, I have a new one to add to that list. Read Fahrenheit 451. It’s an amazing book!

Read both, neither is that long. Also, follow the above suggestions and read Brave New World and Fahrenheit 451 and add Animal Farm. My S17 went to Comic Con a couple of years ago and came home with beautiful T-shirts of several of these books. The F-451 shirt garnered so much attention that he was asked to go to the English office to show all of the teachers.

@techmom99 Animal Farm is amazing! Go George Orwell!
I’d also recommend Ender’s Game. It’s a great book, and even better, it’s one many would consider YA, making it easily accessible to young readers. It’s similar to both the dystopian books, and (in its own way) to The Lord of the Flies.

I haven’t read 1984 but I read Lord of the Flies last year during freshman year. I didn’t really LOVE the book but it was alright. If you’re looking for a fairly easy to digest novel then Lord of the Flies is perfect because it’s pretty straightforward, at least in my opinion.

  1. Easy read and it's not too long. The concept of the book is interesting (I had to read this for school). Do yourself a favor and search them up on Goodreads. Compare ratings, blurbs (descriptions of the books), and reviews.
