I’m from Changsha, China btw, hope to see everyone at CO compus~
@BARKLEYDEGAULLE Awesome! I’m in England I think they admit somewhere around 5 internationals per campus?
Im from the US (so I don’t know if I will be accepted). On the website, they mention that SSP is an “immersion experience” so there is very little free time. How true is this if you only need 5-6 hours of sleep?
@sillyajay I’ve heard alumni say pulling 3-hour nighters aren’t that uncommon :P… I’m with you on the 5-6 hours thing, though (I usually get around 4, to be honest).
I’ve been way too stressed for the decisions, lol >_<!!! There’s a whole month left!@#!@#!@#!@#!@#!@
@sillyajay: 6 hour nights were pretty de rigueur. Which means that we would go to bed at 2 and wake up at 8 for lecture - which suited my night owl self quite well!
There is a considerable amount of free time at SSP, especially if you don’t sleep. There were nights when we would finish the homework at 11 and spend the next several hours chatting or wandering around campus. You will have time to socialize with people, though you probably won’t have very much “alone time” unless you actively seek it out. Basically, count on spending a lot of time playing cards, but not as much time practicing your instrument (unless you’re super diligent, unlike me).
@araethusa Yo, is there ever a chance to go to the gym?
@Newdle I don’t know about the Boulder campus (this is the first year of Boulder so I’m afraid no alumni can be very helpful about specifics) but NM Tech has a gym that we were allowed to use! Some of our TAs also chose to run outside.
@Southpaw45 Sweet…the anxiety is only getting worse, haha XD
when exactly is “mid-april”
@pigscanfly1324 I got my decision April 10. I don’t know how the extension will affect you guys though.
@pigscanfly1324 I think decisions were released April 10th last year.
@southpaw45 How long were the lectures in general? Was it exactly like college lectures or more fitted towards high school students?
@fusioneer98 Thank you! I think I might wait until I get the results though, just to be sure
Even if I put Colorado as my preferred choice, do I still have a chance at NM?
@toofless I only know that they select two student from China each year. And the other one this year is also in CO campus. Hope to see you there!
@leoursa the lectures on a “typical” day (meaning a day there isn’t a special lecture or a field trip) last for six hours. There is a three hour lecture before lunch and a three hour lecture after lunch. I’ve only taken one college class (a math class at my local CC) but in my experience it is much more similar to college than it is to high school. You are expected to stay awake (sometimes harder than you think) and take notes and sometimes you will spend an hour listening to the AD discuss one proof. However, I would say that it is more accessible than a college class or more similar to a smaller seminar in the way where you can ask questions during lecture and clarify anything. The lecture style is meant to be challenging (by the rigor but also the marathon-like nature that they can take on).
I don’t think they will still consider you for both. The students whom I can remember that specified a campus did so because the dates for one campus conflicted with other summer plans. I would consider emailing SSP and telling them that you are open to both campuses if you don’t have any conflicts. If worst comes to worst and you don’t like the campus you’re placed at (please don’t discount NM because NM is awesome!!!) you can ask to be switched. There were two students who were originally placed at my campus who ended up going to the other campus.
Hey y’all I am in high school in States but I am an international student from China. So SSP is considering me as a US applicant and the waiting process is killing me! I really like this program and I really wanna get in. But I mean I have to find sth to do during summer. I am thinking of whether I should apply for one backup… Feeling not extremely confident about getting in… Waiting is just killing me…
@Catbaby
Were you waitlisted?
I’m from China too Class of 2014 though.
Made me laugh :):
“Speaking of social interaction … please understand that SSP does not provide enough time, privacy, or emotional support necessary for the establishment of serious and mature relation- ships. Free time is limited, and two individuals who lavish time and attention on one another are thereby absenting themselves from the rest of the community. Like other distractions, that would interfere with the cohesive social atmosphere that is our goal. Any relationships should stay on a public, lighthearted, informal, non-serious level.”
Hey! umm no… Just not heard back yet… I think the US notification is april something… Where u from? Did u enjoy it?
