I’m so sad I was really hoping that it would take place
me too :(((((((((((((((((((((((((( I probably wouldn’t get in anyway I guess but I reallllly would love to!! and I hope it’s not canceled regardless. I guess it just mostly depends on what the specific colleges’ policies are and if they are indefinitely suspending their college programs.
Congrats to everyone who got in!!
I’m worried about it being cancelled too (I’m from the US though, so no idea of whether I’ve been accepted yet), but they also said they’d try to do an online program. Although meeting in person would obviously be a more enriching experience, I think online would be cool as well
Do you think not taking the SAT yet would negatively impact my chances? I have good scores otherwise (1500 PSAT, subjects all 800s, 5s on APs); do you know anyone who was admitted without an SAT score?
Nah man, I don’t know for sure obviously but your stats are outstanding and the PSAT says it all.
i guess we just wait for decisions and see what SSP says regarding cancellation/moving to online. good luck to my fellow domestic applicants in the coming weeks for decisions! stay safe and healthy everyone
Does anyone know when decisions are coming out for domestic applicants?
Mid april
Did anyone get an SSP update email with a survey today?
Yes. I had one
What is the survey about? I applied from the US and did not get the survey.
It was just asking about the ease of the application process, site navigation, if there is anything they should improve, etc.
I wonder how it will work if it’s online. Kinda sad that everything getting canceled but it’s understandable. I got into a NIH research program that was supposed to happen in the summer but now they moved it to 2021. Now I only have MOSTEC and SSP. Fingers crossed that I get into one! I’m okay with either. Good luck everyone!
SSP has decided to host it online! Now we just have to cross our fingers and hopefully we get in!
How is it going to work online?
According to the SSP website, there will be a “flipped classroom” model involved with some live teaching and some asynchronous learning. That sounds great, but I was especially looking forward to the “hands-on” activities in SSP (like for the astrophysics program, working in an observatory). Oh well, I am still excited for when decisions come out!
Here’s what they said on their website
“SSP’s Board of Trustees has voted unanimously to hold the 2020 Summer Science Program as an interactive, online experience. A full complement of 144 teenagers, chosen from among 1,402 applicants, will participate remotely, half each doing Astrophysics and Biochemistry. The program fee has been cut by $3,000. Financial aid will still be available, funded by our generous donors.”
Is the acceptance rate the same as previous years?
The acceptance rate for SSP in previous years has been around 10%(according to their website), so I’m assuming that 144/1402 is pretty similar to previous years.
Do most people apply Astrophys or biochem?
It’s roughly equal.
