classof09, agreed :D.

Just wondering on the marketing of the program. It certainly sounds intense--250 applicants, only 72 of which are accepted, which is less than 3%.

I know they send mail to people based on PSAT scores. Are people on their mailing list part of a selective group?

What do you think of the program?

Less than 3%? Please don't apply if thats the full extent of your mathematic ability. hahah jk but for real at least use a calculator. 72/250 =28.8%

i think nickel&dime meant 2500 applicants

no, it's 30% i think he just missed a 0 =P

um, it's definitely not there to make money. The ppl who apply are really self selective cuz it's a very rigorous program and they say that it's very hard to get into, which scares away many people (it sure scared me away last year ^^...but i'm applying this year as a junior). Most of the people who get in go to very good top 10 colleges later on. It's definitely a selective and very challenging summer program. In fact the money that you pay ($3000) doesn't even cover half of the money that they actually spend on you, and they are very good with FA. about 1/3 of the ppl accepted get FA.

Haha thanks. I meant 30%. :P

Good luck, Narcissa! It really sounds like an awesome program; I just get suspicious of these things a bit too quickly because there are so many camps, etc out there. Sorting through college propaganda...ah, it's tough life, right? Haha.

Did anyone get in last year as a sophomore? I'm applying as a sophomore and I was interested in what kind of stats (or other qualities) you need to get in.

^i think for sophmores it has less to do with your grades than your essays. (for juniors too.) i saw some of your stats on the SSP page and i say that they would definitely seriously consider you.

Heres a thread w/ much info http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/summer-programs/298349-summer-science-program-ssp.html?highlight=ssp

What's kind of funny is that ... that links right back to this thread... :)

But otherwise.. I think there were a total of 4 or 5 sophomores last year. Wikipedia says that "SSP 2006 accepted 3 out of 40 sophomores and 69 out of 218 juniors."

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what do I do about my SAT score if I took the SAT in January? I know what my score is, but I won't receive the score report in the mail to include in the application until after the first deadline.

If you know your score from the website, just print it out and send it with the application with a little note explaining you will send an official copy when you get it in the mail. SSP has somewhat of a rolling admissions policy--they will understand--and the fact that it isn't yet official will not make or break your chances.

I emailed Mr. Bowdon a few days back asking the same question and he said it would be fine to include a printout.

OK, thanks! Another question: are chances significantly reduced if the application is received after the first deadline? Are late applications considered only after those received by the first deadline?

I feel that I would be able to write a much better application given a bit more time (yeah, as you can see, I would be cutting it extremely close if I were to shoot for the first deadline).

I think the 22nd is not so much a deadline as it is just the day they start reviewing applications. So its kind of a rolling process from the 22nd on. Idk maybe not though, thats just my interpretation of it.

did any of you receive an email or confirmation from SSP that they received your application? i sent it a couple weeks ago, and i still haven't heard

I read on the website that SSP is only accepting 36 applicants this year (instead of the 70-something from last year??) so does that mean that this year, our chances our halved?! (15%?)

hey slushi, where does it say that ?

About 250 students apply each year. Most are well qualified. Our enrollment is only 72 ... you do the math.

"The academic program is challenging - lectures in astronomy, physics, calculus, and programming are taught at a college upperclass level - but every one of the 36 students receives a very high level of personal attention from the eight resident faculty, so no one is left behind."

36 students...not 72

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH it's both campuses. haha oops sorry my bad

haha whats cool, if we all go to the same summer program we'll finally meet each other =)
