Summer Science Program (SSP)

haha are you talking to me or the ppl in this thread in general?
well anyway:
def gov school above all but i highly doubt i'll get in ;o

which gov school did you apply to?

i think she aimed her question at everyone. personally, SSP seems to be the most demanding of the list (calculus, physics, astronomy, etc. taught in the matter of weeks). however, doing important research, assuming that is of high quality, must also be highly considered. in general, i think that anything you do beyond what most other people can do is the best. i.e. smaller, more rigorous programs can be seen as better than more talked about, well-known ones (harvard, etc.) especially when you just need the money to attend...

wtp, ssp, or research....
i'm kind of biased... so ssp :)

each has its own pros and cons:
- at gov school you'll meet a lot of smart nj people
- wtp is amazing.. and at mit
- research could get you awards at intel
- ssp is just you know... simply amazing.

so choose ssp. :)

I'm below average for this program...especially when compared to the stats posted before...Can you guys take a look and see if I stand a chance?

Sophomore taking advanced courses (my school normally doesn't offer AP/IB until junior year...so this is probably the only point where I stand out) in math (IB Math HL, predicted 7), biology (AP Biology, predicted 5....sadly, not physics), and english (AP Eng Lang, predicted 5)....might qualify for early grad., but unsure as of now
GPA: 4.03 (Weighted, 4.5 for AP/IB, 4 for normal)
SAT: 2130 (710 CR, 760 M, 660 W...completely sucks...)
Ranking: 1/2xx
Nationality: Thai <--helpful?
Requesting fin. aid
Activities/Awards:
-MUN Vice Prez (completely unrelated...but still...)
-Mu Alpha Theta honor society founder at school (and president)
-Peer tutoring (math and science for freshmen HS students)
-AMC 8,10,12 gold
-UKMT (UK math competition) Intermediate/Senior (comparable to AMC 10/12) gold
-Toru Kumon Math Scholarship (2 out of ~140 in Thailand)
-Golf Team

As a note of encouragement, I got into SSP last year even though I turned in my application on the day before the last possible day (a week after the "final deadline" on the website). My essays can't have been great because the alumnus who told me about the program didn't tell me the website address until two days before the official "final deadline." That is, I wrote all of the essays in one night before I got an email saying that the deadline had been extended. Also, my only extracurricular activity is Academic Decathlon, which is neither science-y nor math-y. Perhaps my teacher recs saved me.
SSP was one of the best experiences of my life. Before last summer, I never really had the feeling of being surrounded by so many brilliant but friendly people who wanted to do extra math/science stuff for fun. Everyone got something out of the program...and everyone I talked to either mentioned SSP in a college essay or reused an essay written for SSP.
Really, the most important things to have if you do go to SSP are interest and passion. They teach you everything you need to know. Alright, already knowing calculus helps (a year's worth of high school calc was covered in 2 days). I knew nothing about astronomy or computer programming when I went.
Best of luck!

@spacey

were you in ojai?

Yes, I went to Ojai.

I was wondering if SSP sends out an email to tell you that the application as been received? I haven't received any notification and it's been about a week since I send in my materials.

Yes- my daughter sent an app in about two weeks ago and in a few days received an email indicating that all required parts of her application had been received.

Does anyone know when decisions are supposed to be released. By checking this thread I saw that it was around the 15th last year for people who applied early, so I'm thinking about that time?

hmm...I already got my decision, by call (but I had my GC call the office since the Cornell financial aid app was due March 6 (Cornell summer was my safety) and I didn't want to apply if I got into SSP). So expect to hear from them soon!

Wow, did you have your application in on the 23rd?

I sent it in Feb. 1st for the early deadline. :]

I am mailing my application today through overnight mail. Do you think I will still have a chance of getting in considering it's rolling admission?

Thanks.

The final deadline isn't until late March. It's not actually "rolling admissions" but rather a priority deadline and a regular deadline... So yes, just have it in by March 20th or whatever the deadline is this year.

really? I thought it's a rolling process in the sense they continuous accept students. This means that there are less openings towards the end of the regular deadline, no?

I don't know. I was always under the impression that it was like an early action/regional application system, where there are two separate pools... Shrugs.

I just got the email today! Hopefully my parents are willing to pay the tuition, it sounds like quite the summer experience! Congrats to everyone else who got in and looking forward to meeting you.

When did you submit your application? (Ducktape14)

darn, i got waitlisted.

anyone know what percentage of waitlisted applicants are offered admission?
