nevermind about the yess.

i'm looking at mit, caltech, princeton, or maybe cal.

possible majors/minors: physics, philosophy, computer science, economics

yeah, i think i might be going to this.

Agreed, do this.

WTP is very good for MIT tho

Narcissa, may you let me see your ssp essays?? I just want to see how good yours were and they difer from the others. =)

narcissa: really?
shoot.

how good?

grrr.

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG

PLEASE HELPP!!!!

I got into WTP (ME) and I was TOTALLY not expecting it. OO
My stats are sub par and just.... I don't know... I feel like the application was forced and not as good as the one for SSP. AND they gave me the ENTIRE tuition (SSP gave me none TT)

I"m sooooo torn. I know that after WTP you're practicaly a shoe-in @ MIT but MIT is not my DREAM school. Plus the program is shorter and not as exciting as SSP. When I applied to SSP in the winter I felt drawn to it and really passionate. WTP was a crapshoot since I NEVER in my wildest dreams thought I would get in. And I already got to know some people who are going to be in SSP this summer. PLUS its CA and I've never ever been that far away before.

Can you guys help me at least evaluate the two? I'm totally and completely lost. Both programs appeal to me (except WTP classes are NOT taught by faculty)
I know there are a ton of posts like this, but can you guys help in terms of :

Prestige

Overall experience

Rigor of curriculum

Chance of overall admission.

My heart says SSP but my brain says WTP. I think that I really don't want to disappoint my parents since they REALLY want to see me at MIT. T_T but still...

Help would be ever so loved. <33

Are you sure WTP is a shoe-in? Most colleges still evaluate holistically even if an applicant attends their programs (at least that's what they say).

SSP chooses 36 students for each campus worldwide (judging from the international applicants).

WTP says they choose 60 female high school students.

I would probably do which one you would enjoy better. Both seem to be excellent programs.

It sounds to me that you're more attracted to SSP then to WTP.
My only advice is really cliche.
Listen to your heart!! :)

Hahaha no seriously. If you like SSP more, why not SSP? After all, you're doing summer programs for the sake of learning more and spending an amazing time with your peers, not for better chances of getting into colleges.

Even then, I doubt that MIT will place WTP over SSP automatically.

^ Thanks for the advice. :]

But I think its also the financial aid.
I feel awfully guilty about making my parents pay for SSP. They could afford it, but we wanted to renovate in the summer which would now be impossible...

wait.

you already know what your financial aid is?
you got the packet already?

Don't flame me but I personally think WTP is n00bish.

secshisuhee: I applied early for SSP, so I got my packet last week.

okay ria,

Prestige
SSP wins this one; i think WTP doesn't hold much outside of MIT. Plus it's not really a shoo-in...it's about 80% (but was actually lower last year, like 60%) and according to classof09 the SSP accept/applied was 80% at ojai as well. Plus it was high for other colleges lke HYPS whereas WTP doesn't seem to do that. However, WTP holds the "it's sponsored by MIT" card whereas SSP isn't affiliated with any university (although Caltech, a little).

Overall experience
SSP is more challenging, it seems, because it is physics--and astronomy sounds more fun to me than engineering, partly because I am dead set on never becoming an engineer. WTP teaches you basic mechanical engineering, which, if you have no experience, would be interesting but boring if you have a little bit of experience.

Rigor of curriculum
See above.

Chance of overall admission.
See #1.

I actually wanted to make this even like WTP vs. SSP but idk, it seems like you should go to SSP :P

ria, I can't find anything which says 80% of WTP alumni get accepted into MIT, or any stat of the sort. Don't trust word of mouth on these things. However, if you look on the graph of the SSP recruiting presentation, you'd be very impressed by the college acceptances (you can download the presentation from the downloads section). In order of the colleges alumni MOST FREQUENTLY attend: Caltech, Harvard, MIT, Stanford, University of California. I couldn't apply to WTP as an international, but I do remember seeing that SSP says they take the top 10% in SAT math, while WTP said they take the top 20% or something like that (but then, the average PSAT at WTP is 75, which is way above 80th percentile).

My overall impression said that WTP is NOT as good as SSP, simply from the program description. WTP's goal is to: "to spark high school girls' interest in future study of engineering and computer science" wherease SSP's main two goals are: "to challenge gifted students with new material faster than they can fully assimilate it" "to create an environment where learning is valued for its own sake, rather than for grades or credits".

SSP is better. I'm certain.

What you should do is tell your parents why SSP is better and then ask them which one they're willing to send you to.

look out for your packets, guys. i got mine today. :)

they're mailed from north carolina.

thanks eternallysleepy!

Aaaaahhh

I'm guessing that what eternally meant was yesterday...
since mail isn't sent on sundays...

ggggaaaahhh another whole day of waiting!!

and I don't know about you guys,

but I keep on having this weird fear that SSP made a mistake when they sent me the email. Maybe they were suppose to send it to someone else, but they accidentally pressed my name...

i dunno.

just my little meaningless, stupid, most-likely-realistic fear.

lol
we're sorry. we regret to inform you that we made a mistake on your admission to SSP. we were unable to offer you a place becuase of the overwhelming number of qualifying applicants...

darn... xD

...

lol jk, dun take it for real!

hahahaahahahaahahah

thanks for that.

but just watch.
that kind of email is going to land in my inbox.... just watch.
