to answer the legality question of me getting appointment w/o a nomination

the AFA got the Vice president to give me a nomination, and for USNA the superintendent was willing to give me his nomination, for the USCGA as you all well know you don't need a nomination

As the parent of a son who attended SS last year I would encourage all that get invited to attend and for those that aren't invited don't assume that you will not get in USNA because of it. My son was invited to SS and loved it! He said it was right up there with one of the best things he did in HS. He did not however ultimately recieve an appointment to USNA. He had excellent SAT's 1550 and almost perfect ACT's 35, went to Boy's State, SS and CV Weekend. He received a nomination from out congressman and was told he was very competative and an interview with both of our senators in a competative state. He has a very high GPA, class rank and received 5's on all of his AP's so far and is a NM Finalist / scholarship winner. He has leadership in several clubs that he has been dedicated to throughout HS and plays an instrument. He plays a non-Navy sport that does not give a varsity letter and he needed an eye waiver. (his biggest hurdles) Our Blue and Gold officer told him that he was lucky to have so many other options in front of him as he was accepted to all of his other choices and has a NROTC scholarship at an Ivy League school which is where he is going. He told us many only focus on the Academy (it takes so much work) and don't put the same effort into other applications and ultimately are very discouraged when it doesn't work out at the Academy. He did not receive NAPS or the Foundation and we were told (not sure if this is correct) that because of his grades etc. he wouldn't be offered those as opportunities.

There are many in our area that ultimately did receive appointments but most that we know have had to make a second run at it. I am not sure if he will. It will depend on how much he likes his NROTC unit and the college experience but he is happy and excited about his choice and understands how competative it is.

Our advice is to take every opportunity to show your interest, work hard to get all the materials completed early and then work on all your other plans so that you can be happy if it doesn't work out. Consider reapplying if it's right for you and make the most out of the opportunities offered you. It is possible to have a successful Navy career even if you do not attend USNA and he is looking forward to doing so. If you don't get in SS don't despair, as many on this board still gained admission. Try and relax and enjoy your senior year throughtout this process...it's easy for it to get to you and your family!

One last thought ~ Many have made comments to us about the "fairness of the process" as it relates to competative states. We think it's important to learn early on, when considering a career in the military, that you don't always get exactly what you want even if it may seem like you're qualified. My Dad, a USNA grad, applied for several duties throughout his career and was rejected or accepted but able to be released from his current duty. It's important to learn early on that making the best of a situation will help when taking orders and fufilling obligations. USNA is only one of many hurdles to face throughout a career. Start now with the right frame of mind and it will serve you well!

To those headed for USNA on 6/29...best wishes!

At the summer seminars I remember the academy mentioning that over 33% (yes over 1/3) of the incomming freshmen have a year or more of college under their belt, a few ever have a college degree. so if the navy is the place for you, please join NROTC and reapply next year.

If Macarthur and Eisenhower didn't reapply to west point (each entering WP when they were 19,21 ((I think but they were old)) ) Respectively, We all would of lost something.....

Dictatoranaa you sound a lot like me only a lot more dedicated to your sports-

I don't know if you come froma big school or what but I come from a C-division school that really sucks at sports, and as a result doesn't foster the greatest degree of dedication.

I play goalie for our soccer team, although I'm only 5-6, but somehow i managed to get all division honorable mention. I also do indoor and outdoor track- I do pole vault, and have been improving my PR really quickly.
