Summer Seminar 2005!

Is the air conditioning in Bancroft Hall working properly? I don't understand why you need a fan if the rooms are air conditioned. Last year the Summer Seminar participants were incommunicado, so I'm surprised that you and others can use the Internet and cell phones. Cool!

if i can remember properly...the rooms are not air conditioned. I stayed in the rooms last summer for 2 swim camps and we had the windows open and our fans blowing when ever we were in the room and during night, there was no air conditioning

Awesome info guys, thanks!!!! CANNOT WAIT- 2 DAYS!!!

I am glad I stuffed in several additional pairs of socks after he packed!

The rooms are now air-conditioned. Last summer, they weren't. Talk about being HOT!

Hmmm... I was in touch with my parents at SS last year. I just brought my cell-phone.

my daughter also took her cell phone, but when they said "Lights Out" she followed orders and passed out on the rack:)

its almost over for first session...

hahaha, I did the same, most of the time. But I got up at 4:30 in the morning so I could do my devotion and memorize my stupid rates! On the way to my Aunt's house in Virginia, I was so tired that I slept with my mouth hanging open!

We are driving our S up to NASS 3 and want to stay in the USNA area Friday night. Anyone have any hotel recommendations?
For the students: What's the real scoop on the air conditioning? Do they have it and it isn't on/working or do they not have it?

Thanks!

My son ( a detailer at SS now) said that the only room with air conditioning on his hall is the wardroom. It might be a good idea to bring those fans after all! He loved his squad this session and said everyone did really well!

The Loews hotel on West Street is really nice but a bit pricey. One good thing is that it's within walking distance of the Yard. They might be running some discounts now.

My son just called. He had a fabulous time. He loved everything there. There was no air conditioning but he didn't really mention it as anything he noticed. He said training in the early morning was no trouble as long as you are fit. He passed the physical test with no problem. He liked the aeronautical engineering class the best, I believe. The sea trials were his favorite part. He said it was an even harder workout than wrestling practice but better. He said that his squad worked well together. He said that ALL of his clothes smell really bad.....The midshipmen were really helpful and he said that he made a lot of friends. Oh, lots of pushups, situps, and pullups! Session 2 kids should have a great time.

what time did it end today?!

I think 12:30.

Other than a fan and lots of socks, any other advice on what else to bring? We don't want our S to pack too much or too little. I gather that shorts are key both athletic and nice shorts. Our S will take two pair of running shoes: a newer good pair and an older (throw away, can get wet type) pair. What events should he wear the old cruddy pair of running shoes? Just what are the Sea Trials? I am guessing it may involve water. Any other advice? Thanks!

There was no air conditioning and it did get kinda got at night so a fan would be nice. I brought a pair of old Nikes and a pair of new running shoes. I wore my Nikes to meals, workshops, etc. and I wore my running shoes for PT, CFA, and PRT. I cannot tell you exactly what sea trials is but that it is mostly physical activities and your S/D should wear a pair of old shoes that they are willing to throw away (I threw mine away). Bring sun screen. Like I said before, bring LOTS of socks. Other than that be open, be motivated, and have some fun. If you have any more questions, il try to answer them.

I asked my son if he would have wanted a fan, he didn't. He didn't use all of his socks (12). He had 2 pairs of running shoes. Both were good shoes in good shape but he used the slighly older one I guess for the sea trials. He didn't want to bring an "old" pair because he didn't want to have any running problems etc.. He packed a large suitcase and they did unpack the stuff and put it away.
I haven't gotten any more information from him yet. My son is not as free-flowing with information as my daughter.

Some people might not have used all their socks. My roommates and I went through our socks quickly and were reusing our socks by the fourth day.

sandie, you may not know this, but did anyone you know of fly out of Reagan National airport going home? If so, how did they get there? I think most are flying out of BWI. My S is flying home out of Reagan National. The current plan is for him to take the USNA cadet bus/shuttle to BWI, then take the super shuttle down to Reagan National. Trying to find a more direct way if there is one. Thanks.

Sorry lukestar, i really don't know. What time is his flight at though?
