Summer Seminar 2005!

APan, My friend applied Febuary 1st and JUST got his acceptace letter to the first session today (I applied Feb 7th and got my acceptance letter to 1st session about 2 weeks ago). So it dosent seem like the mail is moving very quick to some people.... keep patient.

The Navy (and the whole military and government, i'm sure) have a "Hurry up and wait" policy.

We all had just better get used to it.

Will do. Thanks. Congrats to all who have gotten in! Hope to see you there :-).

My son applied on Feb 1. PSATs were just ok/ but he is ranked in top 10% of his class. Is there a difference in the different sessions?

I believe that it is substantially harder to get in session 2 and 3 than it is session 1. This is because most people don't get let out of school until mid june and session 1 takes place right at the beginning of June. By the time session 3 rolls around, there are a lot more kids out of school able to do it which makes getting accepted harder

Our state also has finals in late June. My son applied for (and attended) 1st session using the following logic:

Miss 1st week of June. (Let teachers know in advance so work can be done ahead of time, especially for projects, etc)

Come back exhausted. Go to classes 2nd week for finals review and rest up.

Take finals 3rd week, fully prepared and rested.

Worked well for him.

My son knew he wanted SS his sophomore year. He asked to take his mandatory regents exams in January even though the class was only 50% over, took them, did very well, applied for SS, went to session 1 with school approval the fall before and came back and completed the rest of his exams. It was great knowing that some exams were done! Worked well for him.

In Oregon, the Finals are June 14-16.So, He has to speak to the teachers now and hopefully they will work with him. I hope that since they know him and his goal to the USNA, they will work with him and it will all work out. I have faith in it. He is so excited. Oh, what kind of twin sheets does he need to bring? He has been working out all year, but is there a ranking that takes place during the summer? Also, what are the sea trials?

Session 1 is June 4-9. If finals are June 14-16, I don't understand the problem/conflict.

My son was worried about missing the reviews etc... Since they are all IB classes, they do a lot of review in the last week. In addition, there is extra credit given if kids go to the early morning review sessions. However, he thinks all will go well and is more excited about NASS than anything and will make it work. I know most of his teachers will aid him in making sure he is current and prepared for finals.
On a separate note, what is the weather like in early June?

i think the real issue is the SAT on June 4th - maybe its harder for me because im coming for the west coast - i changed from session 1 to session 3

I got in today. Session 2. Can't Wait!

I know they send a list of what to bring, but does any one know of anything else that would be good to have for the week? (that attendees are allowed to have, of course, lol)

-Thanks

I applied the day after application were made available (the 2nd of February I believe) and just recieved my acceptance letter today. My friend applied a few days after me and got his a few days before me.

My PSAT scores are very good; 169 overall, 59 Reading; 55 Math; and 55 Writing. I took the ACT after I sent in my app, so I wasn't able to include my score (a 26). I'm not in any sports. The main activities I have down are MCJROTC and Civil Air Patrol, where I do color guard and drill team stuff in addition to being an officer in MCJROTC. I've put a few various clubs and little volunteering information on my app also (maybe 60-100 hours or so). My GPA is a 3.6 and I'm in the top 20% of my class.

I think the JROTC and drill team is what they really liked.

edit: I'm going to the 3rd Session

Wait...you can change which session you want to go to?

Apan5: Congrats...I am in session 2 as well. Look forward to seeing you there

It is possible to change the session after it is assigned. My daughter did it last year (went from session 1 to session 3 so she could attend the summer IAW at USMA as well.) You need to call the officer in charge of the program. Last year it was Capt Antonelli, I believe.

Oh good old Antonelli... I worked with him back 2 almost 3 years ago when I went to SS, geez that makes me feel old

Don't worry SpiderMD, I went to summer seminar 5 years ago, in summer of 2000. Old is just a relative term.

How many others have applied to several different academies' summer sessions? My dd has. I was visiting with a friend the other day, and she seemed to think that was kind of strange. I'm gleaning from several different posts, that lots of you will be attending more than one sumemr session... Dd will be attending USNA session 1 and AFA session B (so far).

I applied to the West Point seminar...still waiting for a reply. My first choice is Navy, but i wanted to apply for comparison reasons. It seems like quite a few people apply to more than one.

Side note- does anyone know if the sheets are twin XL or just twin? mom wanted to know.

Alright, the stuff they tell you to bring isn't the best list in the world. They tell you to bring shorts, but you need to bring at least 2-3 pairs of khaki shorts. It's pretty much mandantory that you wear khaki shorts during the day. Bring PLENTY of underwear (and sports bras if you're a girl). Just bring ordinary cotton twin-bed sheets. Also, if you want a blanket, bring that too. They don't give you one. However, I just slept in the sweats that they gave us. A word of advice--save one pair of your sweats for not getting dirty, and keep the other one for Sea Trials.

Someone asked what Sea Trials was--Sea Trials is an event that takes place on the second to last day. It starts immediately after lunch, and runs until sometime between 6:00 and 9:00. I went to Session I, and mine ended around 7:00. My friend went to Session 2, and hers ended around 9:00. Her Sea Trials lasted longer than mine, but my I-Night lasted longer. Anyways, Sea Trials is a series of 4 evolutions of intense PT. The event that I remember the most was the Pool evolution. It was INCREDIBLY hard for me. I can swim alright, but everything we did was really tiring. In addition to the pool evolution, you race with Zodiac rafts, do log PT, run the Endurance Course, and PT NON-STOP. At the end of the day, you'll be pretty much dead (just from lack of sleep and pure physical exhaustion). You might end a little early like us. We expected a long shower--5 minutes would have been nice. But no. Together, my roommate and I had 5 minutes for both of us to take a shower. Not only were we incredibly sweaty, but we were also covered in mud. Anyways, after the shower, they line you up against the wall and have I-Night--all the screaming and telling your rates and that kind of stuff. I personally didn't think it was bad at all--yes, they got up in your face, and yes, spit was flying. But I actually thought it was kind of funny. Just keep a straight face, and you should be fine. But hey, on the opposite side of the coin, there were some kids that ended up crying and had to stop. But I don't think it was all that bad...
