Summer Session 2

Hey guys im a freshman admitted electrical engineering student for 2015 and I was thinking of doing summer session 2 since i was too late for session 1. Problem is, I really dont know what classes I should take and I cant find suggested courses for freshman engineers anywhere. Also, session 2 begins August 3rd and orientation is 6th-7th so idk how that works either… someone please help!!

@Gumbymom thanks! Do you know anything about the general elective courses I need to take? This one only has engineering electives… and is it better to take required courses or elective courses in the summer? Sorry for so many questions

First see what is offerred for the Summer session. There are many classes that may not be offerred. How many classes do you plan to take? I would either start the Math series 21A and an English Lit class/Comm 1/3 class or Chem 2A and one of 2 I have already listed. Chem 2A would be dependent upon the Professor. If Prof Enderele is teaching, definitely take the class. Chem 2A is also a major weed out class for Pre-med/Bio majors whom usually take in the Fall quarter, so if you can get that class done this summer, you will be in good shape or wait until Winter quarter.

Here are the GE requirements for UCD: http://catalog.ucdavis.edu/ugraded/gereqt.html

Cultural Anthropology is a good GE since it fulfills the Cultural diversity GE, along with Writing and Social Science (known as a triple dipper).

@Gumbymom thank you so much this was really helpful! Did u attend Davis?

No, my older son is starting his 3rd year at UCD.

Regardless of if you decide to do a required or an elective class, only take one class. Summer session is so condensed compared to a regular quarter, and as an incoming freshman you presumably don’t have experience with how fast-paced a regular quarter is to begin with. Don’t overwhelm yourself, especially not before your freshman year has officially started. If you take summer sessions later on you can decide whether you can handle an additional class or not.

As for whether to take a GE or a required class, that’s largely a judgment call. Would you rather get a GE that you may not really want to take otherwise done so you don’t have to worry about it later? Or would you rather knock out a prereq so that you’re slightly ahead during the school year? There’s no right or wrong answer here, just personal preferences.

For what it’s worth, I took CHE 2C last summer and actually liked the pacing a bit better compared to CHE 2A and 2B during the regular school year. I don’t know how 2A is run during the summer though.
