I calculated the summer session cost to be about $3500 with 2 classes (4 units each) and housing. For anybody who has taken summer session, do these numbers look about right?

Also, i was wondering if the financial aid i would get during summer session would be taken out of any financial aid i would have received for the following year.

I can’t really answer for UCSD but I saw some threads on the summer program for UCSB and students were saying you file the 2013-2014 FAFSA to get that aid for this summer ,so next year is a different aid year. HOWEVER, I know there is something about only being able to get a Pell grant for a certain number of semesters or something, overall, and I don’t know anything about whether the best time to use it is for summer school if you might need more than the standard. As to it coming out of your next year aid directly, however, if it is the way students were discussing it on the UCSB thread, it is a different aid year.

In order to get FA for summer 2014, u need to fill out FAFSA 2013-14, and take 8 units ( 8 in one summer session or 4 sum1+ 4 sum2)
In 2011 I didn’t get any grants only students and parents loans (FAFSA 2010-11). School didn’t have money.
In 2012 I got $2000 in grants, left over from my students loans (FAFSA 2011-12) and the rest parent loan.
It is better to live off campus during summer.
8 units costs around 2700 + 200/300 room off the campus + 200/300 food
8 units 2700 + 1400 school housing with food
