Hello,

I'll be a freshman in the Fall of 2012 and I have a few questions about UC Summer Session.

How does financial aid for this kind of thing work for incoming frosh? I only see details about undergrads.

I'm getting about 12k from Cal Grants, 4.9k from Pell Grants, and about 2k from UCSC Grants.

Would my aid go up to cover the summer session or will I be paying out of pocket for it?

All that grant aid you mentioned if used for summer would mean you wouldn’t have it later in the year to use. Pell no longer issues a second grant just for summer.

I have no personal experience with summer classes as an entering student (I was a transfer a couple years ago and took summer after I had already been there for winter and spring), but it worked out that only my fees were paid by grants. Housing and everything else was 100% out of pocket. I offset the summer amount for housing by using up an old state scholarship from the governor for SAT9 testing (now CSTs) that allowed me to use it whenever I liked and any portion of it I chose.

You’d have to talk to FA to see what they’d do for an entering student.
