Summer Session

I got into PennState (Engineering) for the Summer Session only. Am I allowed to ask Penn State to reconsider their decision for Fall 2018? I won’t have time to go to the Summer Session since I have a mission trip to Asia and other commitments. Paying 10,000 extra bucks for a Summer Session also sounds like a pretty cheap cash grab for me. Could I also ask them to switch my major to Undecided or another major for the Fall of 2018?

GPA: 3.9 W
SAT: 1400

Thanks!

Sigh…

No, you really can’t. I mean, of course you can ask, but you are unlikely to be accommodated. That’s why they ASK if you will COME for summer session. You’ve already been evaluated, and denied, for Fall, that’s how you end up in summer. If you ask to be reconsidered, you forfeit the offer and go to the back of the line, with post-November entrance data (i.e., it gets harder and harder to get in after November 30)

You have been admitted to one of the most competitive majors in a very competitive admissions year at a high-profile school. You had agreed to come, you had agreed to collect the money and schedule yourself accordingly. Summer Session is a regular semester – there’s a graduation in August, there are students, there are classes. You’ll have to decide which is more important to you, the trip, or Penn State.

Cash grab? You pay for the classes and room and board. You get the credits you pay for, so not sure how it’s a cash grab. There are tons of students who applied who got denied from both summer and fall who would line up to be in your shoes.

Every year on this portal, myself and others tell people…DO NOT APPLY FOR SUMMER IF YOU ARE UNWILLING TO GO! The application even says that if you get in for summer, that is the semester for which you have to start. Unless you applied directly for summer (and not fall, with summer option which is what most people do), then you have ALREADY been considered for fall and were denied. You were lucky enough to gain entry for summer.

I’m sure if you want to go on your trip you can be accommodated by going to a branch campus and doing the 2+2, but Penn State has deemed that if you want to go to UP campus, you have to start in the summer.

My daughter did the summer session several years ago and loved it. Those extra 6 credits she took in the summer coupled with her dual enrollment transfer credits, allowed her the opportunity to add in a minor. It was most definitely worth it to us. You have to decide if it’s worth it to you. But Penn State will not accommodate you in switching the fall.
The ONLY caveat to this is if you applied for summer session only. In that case, you an ask to be considered for fall. But again, you go to the back of the line and you will be in the non priority decision pool which is more competitive and you risk your summer admit as well as you will be giving up your space in line. My guess is you did what the majority did and applied fall with summer option and you were denied fall and gained entry into summer. Congratulations as it’s been a heck of a competitive year. If I were you, I’d take it and run.

How is this even a thing? If you could get in for summer and just switch it so easily into fall, every student who applied would take that short cut. You were denied fall. Please do your research before applying to programs. If you can’t come in summer, you’ve already taken a spot away from another worthwhile student who was rejected.

Still under review, getting very nervous
