summer stock audition info

Theatermom

Great information! We had assumed that as tight as the show schedule was that most would not be cast in the full season. It sounds like your D had a good summer there. My D has several auditions she is going to so we'll see if she gets lucky anywhere. It certainly does help to have a little more insight into the process, so thank you.

Good luck to your D!

I hope some of you are getting good news from the Midwest Auditions in St. Louis Sat. I just got a call from a VERY excited daughter, whose privacy I respect online -- but if some of you have kids who aren't so sensitive about sharing info, I'd love to hear what others are getting!

Sue - my d reported seeing the twins' headshots for Henry IV, as well as one of the boys live somewhere in the audition/callback procedure.

what ARE midwest auditions (for us easterners!)??

Summer stock auditions - similar to Strawhats in the NY area, I think there are Northeast ones up there somewhere as well, and Southeast in Florida.

Has anyone heard from Strawhat yet?

Rossij

My daughter's roommate heard and she did not get an audition. My daughter hsa not heard yet, but she sent hers in at the very last minute. She did receive a letter from them saying they had received the application and would be letting her know soon.
I'll post when she hears from them. I think she, unfortunately, may not get an audition either as her roommate and her have very similar resumes. They both went to Northwestern for Cherub program while in high school and are currently sophomores at Tisch/Strasberg studio. We'll see what happens and I'll post as soon as she hears.

Well, if they go by date application received, my d is "SOL"! She sent it at the VERY last minute, just like NETC and didn't get an audition there, either. They SAY they look at every application, but I'm thinking like you; if it's late, they don't bother. They just grab your check and say, SORRY!! (Maybe this should go under the "Mom's role" thread, lol!)
I think that stinks. My d got an audition last year for Strawhat and she's done more since then, so if they're going by resume, she should get an audition. But I'll bet she doesn't!

Rossji,

I can't figure out this Strawhat thing either. My daughter sent hers in very early. Like your daughter she had an audition last year. This year she had basically the same resume and did not. I swear they lost her information because they cashed her first check and then took 6 wks to send the letter stating that they received her application. Then they sent all sorts of emails that she should send in her application. Then they sent her a rejection letter and more emails that they were looking for more applicants (obviously, they did a bulk emailing).

In my daughter's case, we chalked it up to a lack of dance ability. (She has put that on the back burner in favor of voice and acting.) I think there was some mention that the theaters were looking for ensemble cast members for mainly musicals. Her background is mostly straight plays and operas.

No big deal. Last summer, she came home and had some great work, theater and film experiences right in our own area! Believe me, that Tisch training holds a lot of weight!

Good luck!

Well, we received a rejection letter today from Strawhat. This makes no sense whatsoever. My d got an audition last year and had 3 callbacks (then they realized she was still in high school and thus didn't get a part). She has also done MORE since last year, as I've said, thus her resume has more theater experience on it. I think they just take the first "x" applicants that they receive because they don't want to take the time to look thru them. Why should they? They're not choosing the casts! The theaters are! I think this is a total ripoff. That's 2 fees I've paid - for NOTHING. What a racket! Some of my d's friends got auditions with hardly anything on their resume. SOmething is FISHY.....I know; I sound like one of those horrible stage mothers, but it really doesn't make sense based on last year's experience. Had it been the first year she applied, I wouldn't even have questioned it.

My son received an audition time (he heard quite awhile ago), but he sent his application in fairly early. May bolster your impression of a higher (maybe much higher) acceptance rate for early applications.

rossji,

I think you answered your own question below. Given that the resume was BETTER this time, the fact that it was sent in "at the last possible minute" has to be the explanation. What else could it be? Lesson for everyone here.

rossji, like jasmom's S, I know of at least three other Tischies who received audition times for Strawhat this year. All had their apps in early so I think that's the answer right there!

I personally think that if an organization sets parameters such as times to apply or ages, then asks for fees just to apply......they need to respect their own parameters. It's not ethical to say you can send in applications until a certain time and then not consider those apps, especially if they require an application fee.

My understanding is that there is one fee to register for Strawhats, which does carry some advantages, and a separate fee for the audition. While obviously the live audition is crucial, your resume/headshot are displayed whether or not you get an audition, so there is at least marginal value for your money. Most regional theatre auditions take applications until * X * number of audition slots are filled, then that's it. At Midwests, I believe callbacks ran until midnight, so it's not like they can just fit more people in....

I couldn't have said it better! I mean, my d even got a "reminder" email to send in an application about 3 weeks ago. If they were already filled, it tells me they just wanted more money! Why else would they send these emails? Anyway, I wish everyone luck at the auditions! Just a forewarning - last year there were very few callbacks (at Strawhat) because someone told me that MOST of the casting was done already at NETC. So if you got an NETC audition, you're probably better off. Not sure who is first this year (Strawhat or NETC), but as with applications, the early bird....

RossJi, I know your D had a disappointment today. So, I thought I would pass on a late night call from my D who was calling to touch base about an arrangement. It was not a long call but totally UNRELATED to the conversation, she said, "you know XXXXXXX (daughter of your online friend....YOU)?? She is an amazing singer!!" Thought I would pass that on that she apparently impresses my D in Vocal class enough for her to comment out of context late at night when we don't get to talk too often! Pass it on to your daughter, though I imagine my D would have complimented her in class anyway. But if she thought to bring it up to me, your D should know she wasn't just being nice in class! Hope that cheers her up :)

You are such a sweetie. I reread the last couple of posts I wrote; I come across as such a witch! Sorry to all about that; I'm just frustrated because my d REALLY needs to work this summer and I just resent sending in money to people who SEEMED to not even look over the application materials we sent. Of course, I'm not 100% sure about that, but it certainly seems to be the case.
Susan, my daughter is just as impressed (if not more so!) with your d as yours is with mine! She was OUTSTANDING in J&H! And yes, she often gives my d compliments. She's a sweetie, too (hmm.... where does she get it from? ;) Thanks again for the words of encouragement; I already passed them on to my d! (She really isn't too upset about Strawhat or NETC; I'm the one who was ticked off, lol!)

Oh my gosh!! I just saw your post (#42).....how did I miss that before? Did your d see one of my guys? Yes, their headshots where in the lobby showcase for "Henry IV". Wow!! Sometimes I have to pinch myself to realize what a small world the internet and this thread can make it feel like.

Midwest Auditions went well....they both worked numerous hours for the auditions and I am afraid that those hours on top of 5 shows last weekend really tired them out...AND then toss in student run shows and conservatory work...wowwie!! Both were suffering sore throats and colds from being so run down. Feeling much better now though!!

Thanks for mentioning!! It's nice to hear someone crossed their path.

I'm sorry about your daughter's rejection letter. I think what everyone said about sending in apps late may be true;however, my daughter sent hers in much later than I even realized, it arrived on the last date acceptance would occur (she loves living by the seat of her pants, it's hereditary and I take the fifth with regard to which side she gets this from). She heard from them earlier this week or late last week with the usual we did get your application, etc; however, she has not received a rejection or acceptance yet. There was information on their website that they were reserving some spots for those who sent their apps in late. It will be interesting to see what happens with my D who is a sophomore in Strasberg. The worst part, if you can call it that, is if she were to receive a spot , her roommate, who has a similar resume and is very talented, also, received a rejection and she sent hers in late January, I believe. Will let you know when daughter hears whether she got a rejection or an audition spot.

I guess what I have learned about this is next year to start checking in September for all of these auditions. You would think that they would receive all of these dates at Studio through NYU, but that may actually have occurred and my daughter may have missed it. I don't know. I am much like you, I would really like her to do something within the field this summer, in particular because she will be a junior next year.

She has quite the lovely apartment in NYC on 12th St. and her father and I pointed out to her that we would pay all of the rent during the school year, but that she needed to help out some in the summer. I'm afraid she is going to end up working outside the field, although she thought she might be able to work at her studio this summer. We'll see. My point is that I feel your frustration, too. We just have to remember that their paths are all mapped out by a higher being and we have no control over any of this (Although it would be really great if we did; wouldn't it?:) )

By the way, I did see on Playbill that the Disney Studios will be holding auditions somewhere in NYC either right before Strawhat or after Strawhat auditions. I believe they were open auditions, too. I sent the website with the info to my daughter. If I can find it, I'd be glad to send it on to you. Just e-mail me at krisa58@msn.com if you would like that info. You still may be surprised, something may come her way that you weren't even thinking about or know about within the theatre community for summer. Good luck.

Thank you so much for the audition information! Everyone on this board is so helpful. I hope that your daughter gets an audition (at least we'll then know they're not prejudiced against NYU students! Ha ha.)
From what I'm hearing, late January is still on the "late" side which is perhaps why your daughter's roommate didn't get an audition. However, if your daughter gets one and sent it in later, there goes all our theories!
Keeping fingers crossed for you! Thanks again!
