It probably varies a lot from organization to organization but my son didn’t get a firm offer last year until quite late, either late March or early April. My sense is that interns are not a big priority for most companies.

S received an offer today from Cortland Repertory for one of their 3 male intern positions. He’ll have a role in their production of Sherlock Holmes (Assoc. Director of ONCE, Shaun Peknic, is directing this. S is very excited), a role in The Jungle Book, and dancer/ensemble in the other shows. He’ll also have to do some tech work. If anyone knows this theatre/area please PM me. I need to start planning a few long weekends there and I’m not familiar with the area at all.
He received two other offers and decided to go with Cortland.
Next year…I will disconnect from this process I found it almost as stressful as college auditions.
(I deleted this post earlier because I realized he hadn’t decline his other two offers yet, now its all official)
Do they provide housing for him or does he need to find a place on his own? And CONGRATS! This is big!!!
Housing is provided and some meals here and there. Thank you!
MtMajorCook, I have never seen shows at Cortland Rep (although I have been to Cortland - it is small) but I know several actors who have worked there and I have never heard a negative thing about their experience. Congrats to your son! I’m sure he’ll have a wonderful summer there.
That is terrific, congrats, MTMajorCook. I agree, this is just about as stressful as college auditions!
Congratulations MTMC and Son!!!
That’s awesome, congratulations!
MTMC, does he get any points there?
Unfortunately no, they operate under a Guest Equity Contract so the leads will be equity but the interns do not earn points. He didn’t get any offers from theaters offering points.
Even so, getting paid for MT after freshman year is pretty fantastic! Remember all those checks we had to write for summer youth theater?
And don’t forget, once they get paid, they get to deduct all SORTS of things! Start keeping track of mileage to auditions, HS costs, copying costs, buying sheet music for auditions, etc.
As to question regarding when summer auditionees get notified, S was given “offer” for outdoor drama at January OTA audition and was told written offer would come in the mail “in a few weeks”. Still have heard nothing. I know Strawhats is over, perhaps NETC and MWTA as well? SETC is next weekend. I’m guessing many of the individual theater auditions are over. Are there any other big auditions still pending?
Netc is in March. Williamstown website says they let you know in April. The other programs should be anytime now. I figure they cast first and determine apprentice/interns after.
Anyone out there know anything about Huron Playhouse in Huron.Ohio?
Huron is a great company, especially for an early career person. A lot of different shows. I know a lot of people who got their start there.
The downside is (and I speak from 5+ years ago) is the housing is TERRIBLE. An old school with sheet partitions.
Well that would be exciting. Perhaps an “inoculation” against possible housing conditions to come. S generally is not too concerned about such things. If the learning and experience are good, what’s a little extra extra snoring and lack of privacy gonna hurt? He’s WAY more concerned about food - he eats awe-inspiring amounts. Thanks @TheaterHiringCo.
Hey guys- does anyone know if there is a list of study abroad summer options out there somewhere. I would be looking for either/both ones that are attached to a specific school (ex Tisch has an Amsterdam program, though I think that may be during school year, as is RADA) or things that are stand alone. Already thinking about next summer, want to start some research!
Amsterdam used to be available during summers, too. Same with Florence. Both require an audition, as far as I know. Tisch, I believe, also has summer programs in Havana and Prague, and I know there is one in London. They vary in focus. There may be even more but I haven’t checked recently.
