"After a careful review of your application, we would like to offer you admission to The Florida State University for the Summer Term. By accepting our summer offer, you will be able to enroll in the fall as a continuing student.

I am still a senior in high school. how would this work?

"By accepting our summer offer, you will be able to enroll in the fall as a continuing student."

I live in PA. Schools on the east coast usually end towards the end of June. The C term would literally start like 2 or 3 days after graduation/prom for me. Getting myself down to Tallahasse from Philadelphia in 2 days and getting everything situated is going to be hard. It’s doable, it’s not a big deal because obviously admission is the biggest priority for me. I can’t stress over trivial conditions like that if I seriously want to go.

What I want to know is: if there is anything the admission officers can do to bump me into fall. I have some really important family obligations over the summer overseas, and also a surgery that I was supposed to undergo right after school in the summer; recovery would be at least 2 weeks cutting into July. Are there any other terms besides term C, or is that the last one?

Some options that they might consider:
go to community college in Philadelphia, (where I am now) and attend a summer semester and send them my academic progress and ask them to use that to bump me into fall.
send improved test scores and higher GPA. My GPA already went up from 3.6 to 3.7, and a rigor of 4 AP classes my senior year would show. Also, my new SAT scores come out in less than 9 days, and I’m sure they went up at least by a good 50 points. Would this reconsider me for fall?

Are any of these options viable?
FSU is my top choice and there’s a reason I only applied to schools in FL even though I’m from PA. Admission is definitely my priority but this condition of attending summer is really going to make things tough.

Summer C is the last half of the summer ‘semester’ at FSU, so yes, that is the last summer session.

It is possible for you to contact admissions and explain your situation. They may be willing to work with you if there is a true problem with attending summer session.

FSU won’t automatically consider you for Fall, and unfortunately moving from summer to fall start can be problematic with admissions, but you can always try. All it takes it contacting the admissions office, explaining your situation, and seeing what they say. And if the person on the line sounds confused, ask for someone else.

Just be aware that the admissions office will be getting swamped right now with questions.

Okay
Should I accept the offer on the admission portal just in case? Because I’m thinking if I don’t accept now, I will be way behind for housing in terms of priority. Also, it states on the page that it is first come first serve, so they have the right to end the offer if I don’t reply in time.

I understand I lose out on like $50 out of the $200 I pay for the deposit but that’s petty, it’s all good.

Should I wait till Monday to call (I doubt I’ll even get through on Monday, I might have to wait till like next week)? Or should I just accept it right now? Cause If I accept, what if they think I could end up starting in Summer if they give me no other choice, regardless of my situation, since I already made my decision. I feel like they might be less sympathetic.

Adeity…you should be able to take FSU online classes during the summer to fulfill the requirement to start in the summer. Send an email to an academic advisor, but many students go this route.

Really? That would be perfect! I already accepted the the summer term offer just to be safe (first come, first serve), now I’m going to wait until maybe Wednesday to call. Thanks so much for the info… I didn’t even think of something like that.

But if I take online courses, don’t I need to actually go to Tallahassee and take the test at FSU? I’m going to be all the way in PA.

Not necessarily. There are some classes like that, but a lot of online classes don’t have that stipulation (such as Humanities classes, and in many cases Hospitality classes).

Unfortunately, it often just becomes a guessing game and trying to find the magical online courses that don’t require you to be on campus.

Adeity, you should be able to take 2 general online summer classes. Of course, make certain with an academic advisor…but this has been done by many students.

All students in the Florida University System are required to have 9 credits of summer residency. The online classes may or may not count towards that. You have time!!!

NFA means Not Formally Admitted. You’re majoring in a program that requires you to be accepted directly into that major once you have met a few pre-reqs, such as having to take several courses and earning a specific GPA within those courses.

Your summer classes can be anything. Many majors don’t even offer classes that count towards the major during the summer. Typically all that is offered are the liberal studies type classes that go towards fulfilling those requirements. I don’t know what the College of Business does for their programs, but this is how a number of the majors in other colleges work.

One hitch to taking your summer courses online maybe the freshman writing requirement. By the end of your freshman year, your have to complete ENC1101 (Freshman Composition) and a second ENC class. If you have not completed these requirements through AP or dual enrollment classes, FSU requires that you begin them your first semester enrolled at FSU. If you have not taken ENC1101 (or an equivalent), you will have to take it summer term. I doubt this course is given online.

You have strong reasons to switch to fall admission. Maybe there is something you can do to meet the fall admission criteria? Submit mid-term grades or retake the SAT/ACT? When you plead your case to the admission office, maybe you can ask if any of these would be helpful.

@Wallacefl
I’ll ask about the ENC1101 course. That’s fine though right? I mean I’ll just have an extra class my first semester beginning in fall. Sure it’ll be a pain, but I’ll take it if I have no other choice.

And yeah, I really hope they’ll let me switch. I mean the medical reason should be enough for them to consider switching me into fall. I have another test score coming out Dec. 23 and my unweighted GPA did jump from a 3.6 (when I submitted my application) to a 3.7 as of now. By the end of the semester, (mid year grades) comes by it may even go up to a 3.8.

So I called admissions and they transferred me to someone who said that I have to send in a written request via e-mail. I specified the medical reason and well as the late graduation date and got a reply yesterday.

An associate director of admissions replied back stating that my “request cannot be granted at this time.” They stated that admission for the fall term is much more competitive than the summer term. However, they did state that when I send in my midyear senior grades and updated test scores, they will revisit the request.

My mid year senior grades would show a rigor of 4 AP’s and an Honors Calc class (bear in mind I have not had a single AP until senior year). And hopefully my test scores jump a little higher. It comes out on Monday.

What are the chances of this term change request actually happening? I’m really worried, all I want is at least the opportunity to take online classes instead for the summer. I had asked them if this is an option but they never addressed it.
