Summer

What do students do with all their dorm stuff over the summer? I live in AZ, so some stuff is going to be very difficult to ship/bring back. I've heard that some schools let you store stuff in the basement and I've also heard that others don't do anything; you have to go get a storage rental. Thanks in advance!

If you live more than 600 miles away (obviously, this will include you), you get 4 storage labels that allow you to store the equivalent of 4 37" x 18" x 18" boxes. It’s a pretty decent amount of storage. I would say that I have a pretty significant amount of stuff and I’ve been able to make do with my four boxes and a few suitcases home and haven’t had to leave much behind. If you really need extra storage, people go in together on those door-to-door storage pods.

Students who live within a 300-600 mile radius and who live in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania will receive 2 storage labels. Students who live closer than that get no labels. These are the most recent iteration of the storage rules; they changed this year to these rules, so it isn’t guaranteed that they’ll be the same next year, but I think that they probably will.

Edit: There are storage rooms in the basements of each dorm. You store your stuff in the dorm you lived in the previous year and will have to move it in the fall if you change dorms. There is a bustling rides exchange forum where you will probably be able to find someone to pay to drive you across campus for a few dollars if need be.

You can also store your stuff in the res hall you will be in the coming fall – it just depends when you want to move your stuff around campus.

I have also found that people who rent out storage space over the summer with door-to-door storage or another company often don’t use their labels and will give them to their friends if they’re really nice  Definitely take advantage of extra storage labels-- your friends might have to store your stuff as “theirs” for the summer but ultimately your stuff will all stay stored in a Wellesley basement for you.
