SummerStart

I am an incoming freshman for Fall '09, and my parents are pushing me to enroll in the SummerStart program, which runs from 7/5 - 8/14. I'm going to be in the BFA film program in VPA, and I'm beginning to think it might be a good idea to go over the summer and get a couple more liberal arts courses under my belt, as many of my classes, especially after freshman year, will probably be technically focused. Is anybody else here planning on doing SummerStart? Do you know anyone that did it? What do they have to say about it?

I did summerstart and the only things I would have to say about it is that it was a great way to start out the year with a very high GPA. Being that you’re probaly going to end up only taking 2-3 classes in which one of them is an easy freshman seminar class, it should be a breeze. Summerstart is a great way to make new friends but I guarantee you that once the school year begins you aren’t going to hang around that much with those same group of friends you made. Lastly, in the summer it could get pretty boring because the majority of the students are gone.

How much is it? And do you have to live on campus?

http://summerstart.syr.edu/

thats the website and i think you have to pay for the classes that they usually are. and you dont have to live on campus

Not true^ Those who are in HEOP or SSSp does not have to pay a cent. I personally did summerstart and had to pay full freight because I was in neither programs. But just because you aren’t in any of them doesn’t mean you’re not eligible for aid for SS. If you’re financial aid exceeds a certain amount, say 75% and over (not sure of the exact number) of your tuition is covered, then you only have to pay about $150 out of the total cost of summerstart.

Also, living in dorms is definitely required.
Just a heads up, there is also a curfew. I think 9:00 Sunday-Thursdays and 11:00 Friday and Saturdays. The reason for this is that you’re still considered a minor even when you’re in summerstart. I personally believe that it was a great way to keep the new freshmen close and give them a chance to get to know each other well. Once fall semester arrives however, then you can kiss your curfew goodbye. This is when you realize that the people you hang around with in summerstart aren’t going to be there much when the fall term comes. People make new friends, are more involved in EC and a lot of the times since you are taking more classes, students are much more busy.

I think I’m going to do the SummerStart. Are you sure about the curfew? I’m not a minor, so I don’t understand why the school would treat me like one.

There is a curfew. A buddy of mine worked as an RA over the summer last year and the curfew for all his residents was around 9-10pm.

I have a summer job lined up and the job would require me to work 9pm-3am… once to twice a week. Do you think there is anyway I could get around the curfew?

stephard21, as a collegiate just entering, you shouldn’t really be working that kind of shift no matter what kind of experience you have. Summerstart is your time to adjust into the University. But to answer your question, I highly doubt you’d get around the curfew but you could try.

ohhh. well this job took a lot for me to get and its only twice a week and its going to get me a ton of money (cocktail waitressing at a super busy club in armory square). so i guess i’ll just have to take the class at OCC… the job is Friday and Saturday nights and i intended to have it throughout my time at SU. hahah. darn maybe if I get a note from my mom?
