SUNY Purchase

SUNY rejection received today in Oklahoma. Just letting everyone know!

theatreca: When did you audition?

theatreca, i’m really sorry :frowning: thanks for letting us know!!!

I auditioned January 23. And thanks, it was the audition I felt the best about. Like…REALLY good about haha. But I’m sure you all have big fabulous acceptances coming your way, so good luck to you all :).

I believe Purchase is starting a new approach of promoting the BA Drama Studies program, by making Drama Studies kind of a plan B on your application when you audition for BFA Acting. They are not the same programs, though they’re certainly doing their best to make it as confusing as possible ;)

A current review of the SUNY Purchase website reveals that BFA program for incoming 2010 freshman is 135 credits with 102 being directly attibuted to the BFA. This is a far cry from past curriculum and clear change in direction for the College.

It appears the credits are being spread out over four years in a manner that keeps it a BFA program for the full four years.

When compared to Point Park the first year is BA and 30 credits of academics with the remaining three years a BFA and 105 credits.

Suny Purchase looking forward just another BFA acting program and not the powerhouse it once claimed.

The program changes are not as great as the website makes it seem…the administrators were requiring that the BFA program lower its credits in the acting curriculum, telling the chairs that the conservatory was “over credit” (whatever that means) so the chairs made the classes worth fewer credits–only on paper essentially–but the class hours have not changed from previous years. The SUNY Purchase administrators have been making things very difficult by trying to impose new rules about the curriculum (since they don’t seem to understand the concept of a conservatory program being more like a graduate program in terms of focus) but the acting program chairs have worked very hard to preserve the class hours and so far have found a way around these restrictions without compromising the integrity of the BFA.
This is a confusing issue, but as a class rep last year I attended a few meetings about this last year and was very reassured that they were not changing our training, just changing how the credits look on paper.

Hello everyone. Sorry to jump in, but I do have a question:

I sent my official transcript about 3 weeks ago and it still says that they have not yet received it through MyPurchase. I’m worried that this may affect their decision to accept me or not. Would I get a call saying that I was accepted into their PROGRAM regardless of whether or not they believe my application is complete? I just checked the status today and am going to call ASAP in the morning to try and clear things up; I just hope this is not too late. I auditioned early February in LA. Fingers crossed and good luck to you all!

anyone hear anything? i thought we were supposed to hear from them by now…

I was wondering the same thing.

I know at least a few people have heard, so I’m just hanging on tight. Maybe weather screwed them up a little? Who knows. They said they’d call accepted students the first week of March, and that’s not quite over yet. Hold tight!

bogface: Did the people you heard about get accepted or rejected?

They were rejected (really it’s just two people plus the one or two on this forum that I’m referencing, though. So it’s not a lot).

does SUNY purchase offer Musical Theatre Major, or just Acting?

^^Just Acting.

My son is still waiting to hear from Purchase. He auditioned on 2/18 and they said they were shooting for decisions by 3/1. Has anyone received an acceptance letter from the studio production major or performance major?

We had a similar problem. The guidance counselor said that the SUNY schools had requested high schools to mail transcripts to their Albany office. However, she faxed and mailed them directly to Purchase and were received and updated successfully. Hope that helps.

I auditioned for SUNY Purchase at the NYC unifieds January 30 and still have not heard back. This was really confusing since (as far as I know) I was not called back, and I really didn’t feel I had a good audition, especially considering the number of applicants. Should I be thinking I wasn’t rejected, or is it still possible to get a rejection letter?

musicmom…I have a relative also waiting to hear of the decision for the studio production major. To my knowledge, this person has not yet heard back (though was told at the interview that he/she will be accepted!). Still waiting…

soozievt - Thanks for the information. Please keep me posted! My son felt okay about his audition, which was really an interview with some sight reading and ear training, but was a bit uncomfortable with the people who actually interviewed him.
